Development Associate – Grants and Communications

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:

Sacred Heart Community Service (SHCS), located in San José, California, is looking for a Grant Associate to take our resource development and communications programs to the next level.  An integral member of the Community Development team, this individual must be highly organized and possess excellent written and oral communication skills, an ability to work flexibly and creatively. The ideal candidate must be equally committed to our vision of a community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty, an approach of driving policy change through transformational leadership development, and developing programs through an anti-racism and anti-oppression worldview.  For over 56 years, SHCS has been one of the leading institutions addressing poverty in Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines addressing the consequences of poverty through impactful programs while building power with people to push for systemic change.

Position Summary:

Sacred Heart Community Service (SHCS) is seeking an excellent writer that is looking for a career in nonprofit development and communications. The Development Associate will be responsible for preparing a variety of funding proposals, presentations, and reports to foundations, corporations, and government sources.  This individual project manages the grants process from identification through stewardship by guiding program managers, finance professionals and others.  This person will enjoy writing grants for a variety of projects that fight poverty by providing education, housing stability, food programs, racial justice, leadership development, and grassroots political organizing.

Description of Duties:

Grant Writing (80-90%)

●        Write, develops, leads, and implements the preparation of funding proposals to government, foundation, and corporate sources.

●        Develops, implements, and tracks plans to identify, establish contact, solicit involvement and maintain communication with government, foundation, and corporate sources in the Bay Area.

●        Participates in donor solicitation activities including presentations and events.

●        Manages efforts and tracking systems for the cultivation and solicitation of government, foundation, and corporate funding sources.

●        Works with programs to gather and crafts impact stories (written) for external donor communications.

Communications (10%-15%)

●        Supports execution of donor communications including monthly e-newsletter, appeals, and annual report as needed

●        Collects stories directly from donors and program participants and edits/writes such stories for strategic impact

General (5-10%)

●        Supports the planning and implementation of agency-wide programs, events, training, and outreach efforts.

●        Actively participates in agency-wide programs and is available for work during November/December giving season.

●        Acts as a “mandated reporter” by maintaining strict adherence to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Law.

●        Perform other duties as assigned

Required:
Proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

Position Requirements:

The Grant Associate should have the following skills and experience:

●        1+ year(s) experience with technical writing, business writing, creative writing, report writing, proposal writing, or grant writing

●        Strong commitment to our vision of ensuring every child and adult is free from poverty

●        Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Proofreading skills essential.

●        Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to effectively and independently manage competing priorities and ability to maintain confidentiality of financial information.

●        Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multi-task

●        Proficiency with CRM databases (such as Salesforce), Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

●        The position requires computer use up to 6-8 hours a day

●        Must successfully pass a DMV and Criminal background check

Reporting Relationship:

The Grant Associate reports to the Funds Development Manager and joins the team of the Community Resource Development department.

Compensation:

This is an exempt salaried positioned paying $54,000 - $60,000 commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include fully paid medical insurance for employees and majority paid medical insurance for qualified dependents, dental insurance, vision insurance, 12 paid holidays, 10 paid sick days per year, paid vacation starting at 10 days per year, additional wellness benefits, basic life and long-term disability insurance, professional development and more.

This position is temporarily remote.
