What you will be doing:
The Pula Field Operations
Pula’s core product, Area Yield Index Insurance, is built on the unique ability to execute real-time crop yield monitoring at scale and make sense of this data along with other inputs including remote sensing. In 2022 Pula is completing about 60,000 individual crop cuts over three or more farm visits each, collected by approximately 1400 freelance enumerators across a dozen countries. Crop cuts are expected to exceed 100,000 in 2023. The timely execution of crop cuts is a unique challenge - a crop ready to harvest must be harvested within a timeframe of days, requiring excellent planning and preparation - there is little to no room for missed deadlines. This work of data collection and transforming it into a clear and defensible base of evidence for insurance payouts is the core of what Field Operations does, with support from the Innovations team who have developed our in-house data collection and monitoring tool Mavuno.
Our physical presence on the ground not only ensures the most precise and comprehensive capture of both outcomes (yields) and causes (weather, field conditions, pest, disease, and farm practices), but is core to gaining the trust of farmers and clients that our conclusions are based on their lived experience. This data must be combined seamlessly with remote sensing data such as climatic conditions at key crop growth stages and proxy indicators of crop health and yield such as NDVI (supported by our in-house remote sensing analytics and visualization tools).
Data & Insights
Within the Field Operations team, the Data & Insights team is responsible for ensuring the highest possible quality of ground truth data collected by the field team, provide the tools and business intelligence support needed for excellent field execution, glean and communicate actionable insights from collected data, and report out standard and ad-hoc knowledge products based on field data to internal and external stakeholders. The team should further lead recommendations and innovations around data collection on the ground. The Data and Insights director will work in close collaboration with Field country teams and the insurance payouts team.
The outputs of the D&I team will be subject to strict scrutiny by clients and insurers, requiring the utmost attention to detail and thoroughness in process to ensure every report, conclusion and data point is highly defensible.
