About the opportunity
SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for a Cultural Resources Team Lead to join our growing Raleigh-Durham, NC office. You will lead and grow a developing team and support various projects in Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and across the Southeast. We work to support our client’s needs across multiple service areas including renewable generation, oil and gas, transportation, site development, transmission, and ecological restoration.
This is a regular, full-time, salaried position with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule or remote within a commutable distance to projects. You will report to the Senior Office Director. The successful applicant will oversee team members and project execution to ensure technical rigor and client care. This position will be instrumental in leading and growing a robust cultural resources program that includes supporting existing clients and projects, capturing new work and clients, mentoring junior staff, encouraging teamwork and cooperation, working with other offices, and driving overall scientific and business excellence.
This position is available at the below levels and title will be based on years of relevant experience or expertise:
- Cultural Resources Team Lead - typically at least 8 years of related experience or expertise
- Senior Cultural Resources Team Lead - typically at least 10 years of related experience or expertise
What you will accomplish
- Oversee all aspects of field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production to ensure compliance with SWCA's high quality standards for technical work, survey plan development, agency requirements and guidelines, and general standards of scientific quality.
- Manage the technical execution and financial performance of individual cultural resources projects and effectively coordinate with and manage clients and agencies.
- Manage client relationships and conduct business development with new and existing clients.
- Network within agencies and industry organizations to establish and expand our state and regional client base and revenue in the areas of archaeology, historic architecture, permitting, and broad-based cultural resources services.
- Identify and qualify sales opportunities (prospects and proposals), manage opportunities, and make recommendations.
- Lead a growing team of cultural resources personnel. Supervise, instruct, mentor, and facilitate professional growth and development of all team members.
- Take initiative and resolve problems to ensure tasks are completed in the most efficient manner.
Experience and qualifications for success
Required
- Master’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Architecture, History, or other related fields.
- Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in consulting, including team leadership, business development, and project management and execution (developing and implementing budgets, schedules, and scopes of work from pre-field tasks to final report preparation).
- Experience in Southeastern archaeology, with experience conducting and leading archaeological projects along the East Coast, Mid Atlantic, and Upper South.
- Experience working with Mid-Atlantic and/or Southeastern State Historic Preservation Offices.
- Possess advanced skills and knowledge in one or more specialty scientific areas (e.g., lithic, ceramic, or faunal analysis; osteology; historic architecture).
- Meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications Standards for archaeology and/or architectural history.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising, mentoring, and providing leadership for other cultural resources professionals.
- Strong business development skills as a “seller/doer” to develop productive business relationships with agency, client, and industry contacts.
Preferred
- Proven experience working with the Tennessee Valley Authority, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, the US Forest Service, and other Federal agencies.
- Established relationships with the North Carolina Office of State Archaeology and/or the Tennessee Historical Commission.
- Familiarity and experience working with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office, or the Georgia Historic Preservation Division.
- Working relationships with Tribal Nations that have an interest in the Southeastern United States.
- Experience preparing NEPA documents to support Section 106 consultation for a variety of federal agencies.
- Involvement with regional and national professional historic or archaeological societies.
Additional Information
- Ability to travel on average 25% of the time, including overnight stays.

An employee in this Raleigh, NC based position can expect a salary of $75,400.00-$98,280.00/year for the Cultural Resources Team Lead position, and $85,280.00- $111,280.00/year for the Senior Cultural Resources Team Lead position. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
