As the host of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF), the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) regularly recruits legal analysts to support its technical assistance programs. This call for expression of interest serves to invite individual analysts to put themselves forward as candidates in advance of future consulting opportunities.
Background
The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an independent think tank that delivers the knowledge to act. IISD hosts the Secretariat to the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Metals, Minerals and Sustainable Development (IGF).
The IGF’s overarching objective is to support resource-rich countries to leverage mining for sustainable development. The legal and policy environment is one of the six pillars of IGF’s Mining Policy Framework (MPF). IGF believes that a mature modern legislative regime provides a foundation for good mining governance and contributes towards sustainable development in all aspects of social and economic life.
The legal analyst will support the work of the IGF Secretariat, specifically the Global Mining Tax Initiative by contributing to the analysis of tax laws and regulations, as well as legal research, and capacity building related to mining and/or international tax.

The consultant’s tasks will vary by project. They will at a minimum include:

The consultant will work under the supervision of an IGF policy advisor overseeing the relevant technical assistance program and managing the relationships with the partner government administration.
Profile
Undergraduate or master's degree in law from a recognized post-secondary institution
Specialization in international taxation, or mining disciplines are strongly encouraged
Strong writing skills
Proven academic or professional experience undertaking primary and secondary research in relation to international and/or mining tax law
High integrity and ability to work independently to meet tight deadlines
Driven and motivated to contribute to a world where people and the planet thrive
Languages: although usually in English, the work may require professional fluency in French, Spanish Portuguese, or other languages. Consultants with language skills are encouraged to apply
Duration
Consultants are typically recruited for 20 to 40 day-periods. Contracts include specific deliverables and deadlines.
Remuneration
Commensurate with skills, experience and location.
Location
The work will most often be done remotely. Travel opportunities will be examined when relevant.
