Overview:
The Center for Financial Inclusion (CFI) was founded by Accion in 2008 as an independent think tank on inclusive finance. CFI works to advance inclusive financial services for the billions of people who currently lack the financial tools needed to improve their lives and prosper. CFI leverages partnerships to conduct rigorous research, test promising solutions, and advocate for evidence-based change.
CFI’s thematic priorities include climate risk mitigation and adaptation, women’s financial inclusion, consumer protection, and data opportunities and risks. Inside the climate workstream, CFI aims to improve the understanding of the demand and constraints of vulnerable populations when adopting and using financial services to cope with climate shocks. Moreover, CFI works to pilot, evaluate and showcase product innovations and advocate for evidence-based change in financial services provision.
CFI recognizes that financial services could play an essential role in helping low-income and vulnerable people prepare for, manage through, and recover from climate shocks. Building on CFI’s scoping mission, and desk research, CFI has designed a long-term project to pilot innovations that can help low-income communities cope with climate shocks in a selected area in Guatemala. In this project, CFI will partner with a financial service provider (FSP) to design and test a portfolio of innovations related to remittances and climate-resilient agriculture.
In the first phase of this long-term project, CFI plans to develop a diagnostic study of the demand and supply of financial products to cope with climate shocks and identify an FSP to partner with to co-design and pilot financial services in the next phase. The study will assess the needs and barriers that low-income populations face and identify the risk factors and opportunities for FSPs to provide services and products to cope with climate change. CFI will select an FSP to partner with in the next phase to codesign and implement innovations based on location, commitment to ESG, green finance portfolio, and other indicators following USAID recommendations.
