Program Overview
WRI Indonesia is an independent research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. At WRI Indonesia, we aim to bring innovations in research and business approaches to create the enabling conditions for Indonesia to achieve robust economic growth while respecting environmental and social values. We seek to contribute to the accomplishment of ambitious sustainable development goals through working with leaders in public and private sectors, as well as collaborating with civil society organizations, in turning big ideas into action.
Within our Agriculture, Forest, and Land Use (AFOLU) Program, we envision critical ecosystems such as forests and peatland across Indonesia to be governed fairly and sustainably. We believe sustainable land use management is key for Indonesia to meet its climate goal, in line with keeping the global climate target below the 1.5-degree Celcius warming threshold, while providing sustainable livelihoods to forest-dependent communities and conserve biodiversity in the landscape. We intend to achieve this through safeguarding the remaining forest and peatland from deforestation, degradation, and fragmentation; maintaining forests and peatland quality through sound stewardship; and restoring degraded ecosystem to improve its productivity, conservation value, and ecosystem services.
To this end, one solution that WRI Indonesia wants to offer is promoting Landscape Monitoring initiative. The overall objective of this initiative is to bring together willing company partners, as well as local government and CSOs to work together to develop and pilot deforestation monitoring system, consist of monitoring, verifying, and addressing deforestation alerts at the landscape/jurisdictional scale. This collective approach is expected to improve efficiency and maximize potential for impact and scalability, as compared to individual monitoring initiatives. WRI Indonesia is currently developing and using radar-based forest monitoring system known as Radar Alerts for Detecting Deforestation (RADD) with partners to make it much easier for stakeholders to see deforestation happening in near-real-time and with greater accuracy. With this information, users can more quickly mobilize follow-up actions on the ground and work to reduce deforestation rate and improve the sustainability of commodity supply chains.
The consultant will be based in Jakarta to support the Peat and Forest Monitoring team in developing the GIS part of the platform. He/she will work together with the forest and landscape monitoring team and providing technical support to create automation process in producing prioritized alerts based on raw changes from radar detection.
The consultant will report to WRI Indonesia Forest & Landscape Monitoring Project Lead, and coordinate with WRI Indonesia forest and landscape monitoring team. The work will span for 3 months with probability of an extension depending on the working result and focusing on selected deliverables as agreed by WRI Indonesia.
