Consultant as Communications and Social Media Specialist on Ocean and Plastic Waste

Program Overview

As an archipelagic country, Indonesia continues to struggle with various environmental issues regarding its ocean, due to unsustainable development, such as marine and coastal pollution, climate change, and habitat destruction. Increasing demand for resources, technological advances, overfishing, along with inadequate stewardship and law enforcement, are also contributing to the ocean’s decline.

WRI Indonesia hosted the secretariat of Indonesia’s National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), as part of the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) which initiated by the World Economic Forum (WEF), as a bold neutral platform responsible for coordinating and facilitating the public-private partnerships working to free the world from plastic waste and pollution. The initiative aims to tackle one of the most difficult and pressing challenges facing our global commons – plastics pollution – in particular the plastic pollution of rivers, deltas, and the ocean. The Government of Indonesia has made significant step by committing to reduce plastics pollution to the ocean by 70% by 2025. GPAP is supporting Indonesia to reduce plastic pollution to the ocean through National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). The partnership brings together top leaders from government, private sectors, and civil society organizations to contribute to achieving national ocean plastic reduction target.

The secretariat of Indonesia’s National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP), hosted at the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia, is looking for a Communication & Social Media Specialist to support the Secretariat in enhancing growing NPAP activities. The role will be based in Indonesia. This position will report to the WRI Indonesia Communications Coordinator and coordinate closely with the NPAP team at WRI Indonesia and GPAP team at the World Economic Forum.

Job Highlight

The Communications and Social Media Specialist will work under direct supervision of Senior Communications Coordinator to support WRI’s effort of reducing marine pollution as well as promoting sustainable ocean by executing communications strategies and plans, as well as managing multiple communications channels (such as website, blog, publications, media relations, and events). This position is expected to proactively collaborate with the program team on related communications works. This position will be based in Jakarta, Indonesia but might require to do domestic travel.

What You Will Do

  • Implement communications strategies related to Oceans and Plastic Waste. The implementation of communication strategies comprises of but is not limited to communications materials development, events management, media engagement, video development, writing, and social media engagement.
  • Develop, implement, and improve creative campaigns to increase awareness and improve stakeholders’ participation towards ocean and plastic waste.
  • Coordinate with the Senior Communications Coordinator and the Oceans team to support and manage communications strategies for reports, events, conferences, and news opportunities including media content
  • Develop ideas, write, and edit a variety of internal and external materials, such as blog posts, media materials, newsletters, op-eds, website content, and more.
  • Engage with third-party vendors and consultants.

What You Will Need

  • Legally able to work in Indonesia;
  • bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or other relevant fields;
  • Professional experience of 3+ years in communications in communications, public relations, or journalism field;
  • Social media savvy, experienced in developing and implementing a social media strategy that are useful, valuable, and relevant to the project and its audiences;
  • Business proficiency in both Bahasa Indonesia and English, with a strong writting and speaking communications
  • Ability to communicate effectively with various type of audience and/or stakeholder such as government officials, private entities, and community;
  • Having a visual skills, such as photography, graphic design, and Adobe Photoshop are desirable;
  • Adaptable to rapidly changing priorities and able to manage multiple deadlines while still maintaining todeliver high-quality work products;
  • Ability to travel when needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experiences in international organization or consulting firm;
  • Experiences in managing social media, especially Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn;
  • Experience in working with reporters or members of the media;
  • Interest and experience in ocean, environment, or sustainability-related issues in Indonesia;
  • Articulate, skilled writer with writing experience (professional clips or writing samples).

Deliverables

  1. Monthly consolidated report on delivery, achievement, and lessons learned. Other deliverables include but not limited to:
  2. Support for social media, including:
    1. Content plan
    2. In coordination with WRI’s graphic design team, develop at least 4 social media content each month
    3. Monthly report on strategy and performance
  3. Media outreach
    1. Media mapping
    2. Support media engagement and other media-related events
  4. Website update
    1. Update WRI Indonesia’s and project’s website regularly
    2. Assisting in website evaluation
  5. Supporting other communications material development, including but not limited to infographics, video, blogs, etc
  6. Contribute to the development of project’s product knowledge and reporting activities, including monthly report, quarterly report, and annual report particularly on communication aspect
  7. Supporting other communications-related activity

Durations

February – September 2023

Terms of Payment

Daily-rate based consultant with maximum 10 (ten) working days per month

Contract Arrangement

Individual consultancy contract (Part-time, limited term)
