CONSTRUCTION TRAINER

Position Purpose

A versatile position within a dynamic nonprofit that provides relief to survivors of natural disasters. The position is full time and is responsible for community & beneficiary engagement, fostering strong bonds between the community and AHAH on all programs, and conducting beneficiary selection as required. This position is also responsible for monitoring the effectiveness of AHAH work by collecting and responding to feedback.

The position will teach our staff team the construction skills required to repair homes after a disaster. The role will also help in the assessment of technical issues and play a large part in establishing new programs and optimizing existing.

Essential Functions

  • Train-the-trainer

    • Teaching our staff to perform construction tasks, so that they can safely guide volunteers through work on work sites.
    • Teaching our field teams on the assessment of homes, considering structural integrity and identifying hazards.
    • Provide support and guidance to all Team Leaders
  • Support

    • Provide input to the program on items such as work queue, the scope of work, domestic construction techniques, material procurement, onsite volunteer engagement, and worksite management.
  • Develop

    • Oversee, develop, and implement the Site Supervisor Training Program.
    • Standardize, develop, and manage our project management systems including timelines, estimates, assessment documents, recovery tracking spreadsheets, SOPs, etc.
    • Assist PMs in defining special program resources on an as-needed basis, including new vendors, technical expertise, permitting information, etc.
    • Research, develop and define resiliency techniques & standards for US Recovery on a project-by-project basis.
    • Provide/ facilitate training & professional development opportunities for all field staff and volunteers as needed and available.
    • Provide in-person support for project development, field staff development, and general program operations as needed.
    • Support the startup of new programs and manage the transition of new US Recovery Programs.
  • Oversight

    • Ensure all Trainees and Team Leaders are consistently meeting deliverables.
    • Coordinate with the Senior Project Manager to ensure technical proficiency and support across all US Recovery programs.
    • Coordinate with the Safety and Security Advisor and Senior Technical Advisor to standardize, develop, and ensure safety standards across all US Recovery programs.
    • Collaborate with the US Recovery Manager to define/ revise eligibility and vulnerability criteria, Job Descriptions, and general field standards on each program.
  • We have decided to relax the requirement for Covid-19 vaccination for on program staff. While we still strongly recommend Covid-19 vaccination, along with other standard and travel immunizations as recommended by the CDC and WHO, Covid-19 vacation will no longer be required.

  • Other duties as required.

Position Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.

Related Experience: Previous experience working with All Hands and Hearts preferred. 2+ years experience working in construction preferred. 2+ years of experience working in project management preferred.

Special Competencies/Certifications: Must have good written and oral communication skills (English). Must be confident working with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word. Needs to be well organized and able to prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks. Strong leadership skills with a proactive approach to identifying and solving problems. Able to manage large groups of people and perform in a complex and diverse environment. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

  • Constantly works in outdoor adverse weather conditions
  • Frequently moves items weighing up to 40 lbs on work site or on base
  • Frequently operates construction equipment (table saws, impact drivers, drills, and more)
  • Frequently operates computer
  • Frequently ascends/descends ladders and scaffolding
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
  • Living in communal environment
  • High stress situations in an immediate post-disaster environment with limited amenities

Compensation & Benefits

  • Typical starting salary is $16.00/hour - $16.50/hour, and up to $17.00/hour for highly qualified candidates who have previous experience in this role.
