Conservation Officer, Oceans Sustainability (18-month Contract)

WWF-HK is looking for a Conservation Officer, Oceans Sustainability who provides support in projects and initiatives relating to conservation. There are two conservation themes under ocean conservation with their respective pathways to change, strategic priorities are identified for each theme and pathway to deliver our vision of productive and resilient ocean ecosystems, sustaining human well-being and conserving biodiversity.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the overall strategies and operational plan for WWF-Hong Kong’s s Ocean Sustainability programme.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of assessment of sustainability on locally-produced seafood, including literature review, data collection, data analyses and recommendations for improvements in sustainability of local fisheries.
  • Establish and maintain contacts and networks with external stakeholders relevant to the initiative, along the chain of custody.
  • Contribute to engagement strategies with external stakeholders on seafood sustainability, including to undertake assessments of the sustainability of relevant seafood products with established procedures and provide seafood sustainability advice to these stakeholders.
  • Connect and keep up-to-date with trends in supply, catering and retail markets in Hong Kong, and identify timely adjustments to the Programme.
  • Work closely with internal teams to increase the general awareness of Oceans Sustainability.
  • Participate in promotional activities with relevant stakeholders.

Required Functional Skills:

  • Degree in Environmental or Marine Science, Ecology, Fisheries, Social Sciences or other relevant areas relating to conservation and sustainability, especially food sustainability, or environmental footprint.
  • 1 year or more relevant working experience in environmental/sustainability-related fields, fisheries or aquaculture is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with the Hong Kong context for marine conservation, food sustainability or trade also is important.
  • Experience in independent project management is preferred.
  • Research skills in relevant field desirable.
  • Analytical thinking skills needed.
  • Candidate needs to be assertive with high-quality persuasion and influencing skills.
  • Good command of both written and spoken English, Cantonese and Putonghua (Mandarin).
  • Good communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Good persuading and influencing skills to develop and maintain relationships with new contacts.
  • Proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and other relevant office-related technologies.

Required Behavioural Skills:

  • Perseverance, flexibility, good judgement and willingness to take risks.
  • Outgoing and sociable, with good interpersonal and communication skills for relationship building with stakeholders.
  • Positive thinking, with a ‘can-do’ attitude and with the ability to multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently and also a resourceful, motivated team player able to work in collaborative work environment.
