Conservation Officer, Oceans (1-year Contract)

WWF-Hong Kong is looking for Conservation Officer to support the conservation of marine conservation priority sites, especially Shui Hau sandflat. This job holder will be heavily involved in community engagement, ecological surveys, visitor and environmental monitoring, as well as data analysis and report writing to facilitate formulation of effective conservation measures for the priority site(s).
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Carry out the conservation work at marine conservation priority sites, primarily at Shui Hau sandflat.
- Implement conservation programme at priority site(s), through ecological and environmental monitoring, study of visitor impacts, stakeholder engagement and public education etc.
- Assist in collecting, maintaining and analyzing data from Internet of Things (IoT) devices and ecological surveys to recommend improved management plans and MPA strategies.
- Engage with key stakeholders in ocean conservation projects, such as government officials and local communities, to advance the goals of MPA and promote the sustainable use of marine resources in Hong Kong.
- Assist in tasks relating to conserving threatened habitats and species, such as habitat restoration and fieldwork
- Assist in lobbying for effective legislation amendments and advocating for the development of frameworks conducive to marine conservation, providing advice to government bodies and other stakeholders through participation in engagement meetings, working groups, and committees.
- Enhance WWF-HK’s profile by supporting media campaigns such as interviews, collaboration with WWF communications team and engaging the media.
- Represent WWF-HK at relevant functions and meetings.
- Complete other assigned tasks to support the team’s goals
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or Ecology is preferable. Social Sciences or other relevant areas relating to nature conservation will also be considered.
- 1-2 years relevant working experience in conservation-related programmes.
- Knowledge of relevant research methods is desirable.
- Experience in and physically fit for fieldworks.
- Experience in programme management is an advantage.
- Strong critical thinking skills in research, analysis and formulating organizational positions and responses to current and emerging issues.
- Good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, with proficiency in Putonghua an advantage.
- Good report writing and data analysis skills.
- Proficient in computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with proficiency in ArcGIS an advantage.
- Certificates in first aid, swimming, driving license and scuba diving are preferable.
