WWF-HK is looking for Conservation Officer in our Conservation team, reporting to Senior Manager, who will be part of the HK Biodiversity and Conservation Policy team, responsible for preparing well-written submissions and thought-out responses to Government and private/public sector development proposals in areas of conservation importance/priorities; formulating WWF Hong Kong’s positions on conservation issues relevant to Hong Kong biodiversity in consultation with relevant internal & external stakeholders and partners to safeguard conservation priorities in response to current and emerging issues; and being a team-member in guiding the organization’s work to conserve Hong Kong’s biodiversity.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with the HK Biodiversity and Conservation Policy team on reviewing and commenting terrestrial and wetlands development proposals to minimize impacts to biodiversity, conservation planning, and the implementation of terrestrial and wetlands projects.
- Undertake field visits to record ecological information of relevant development proposals or potential conservation projects.
- Conduct site checks on suspected habitat destruction activities and sending complaints to relevant government authorities.
- Assist the Senior Manager to reach out relevant decision makers in the government, policy makers, donors, partners etc for buying-in/promoting our views on any conservation/environmental topics that are of our concern and expertise.
- Draft line-to-take, prepare social media content, respond rapidly and carry out events and activities relevant to any development projects and emerging conservation/environmental issues that are of our concern.
- Handle enquiries relating to conservation and environmental protection matters in a timely manner.
- Notify the Senior Manager on all external communication of ecological sensitivity and importance with documentations prepared.
- Liaison with WWF International to provide supports to the team when needed.
- Keep abreast of proposed, new or amended policies, regulations, gazettes and developments relevant to conservation and take appropriate actions.
- Assist the team’s online and physical filling system and reporting.
- Compile and monitor non-salary departmental budgets for the team. Be pro-active and provide budget management observation to the team as appropriate.
- Assist the team in preparing quotations and submitting for all payment request and payment services requisition forms.
- Assist preparation of funding proposal programme plans when necessary.
- On occasions, provide conservation talks to relevant stakeholders and to brief media.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Ecology is preferable while Social Sciences or other relevant areas relating to nature conservation will also be considered.
- 2-3 years of relevant working experience in conservation related areas and implementing conservation programme.
- Understanding of conservation-related social policy and policy making processes in the local context.
- Have good critical thinking skills to research, analyse and formulate organizational positions and responses to current and emerging issues.
- Good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese, preferably Putonghua as well.
- Good report writing and data analysis skill.
- Proficient in computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, GIS/remote sensing, and preferably experience in searching of land records.
