Compliance Monitor Technician - Archaeology

About the opportunity

SWCA seeks an Archaeological Monitor (HR Title = Compliance Technician) based in Rawlins, Wyoming. Work will include working independently, coordinating with construction crews, monitoring construction, keeping detailed records, and documenting cultural resources under the supervision of permitted staff. It may also include other field tasks. You will inspect construction areas, identify cultural materials, collect data with tablets, record sites using state-specific protocols, and make National Register of Historic Places evaluations.

This is an hourly, regular-status**, benefitted** position for the duration of the monitoring project. You will typically work according to the construction schedule. Daily work will vary between 8 to 12 hours, depending on the construction crew’s schedule and needs. Work will occur Monday through Friday, with some Saturday work anticipated. Sundays will be off. Lodging will be covered for the entire duration of monitoring and per diem paid for all days worked. We are currently looking for assistance for the duration of the monitoring project, which is anticipated to extend from July through November 2023, with the possibility of returning for work in 2024. Pay ranges from $21.00-26.50**/hour** commensurate with experience, with overtime paid at time-and-a-half. Compensation includes paid sick-time accrual and single-occupancy lodging in a dedicated apartment. Per diem is $40/day for days worked, because full-time housing is provided. A work vehicle and safety gear are also provided. This opportunity allows you to live near the project and is ideal for someone who would like to not pay for personal housing while working in the field.

What you will accomplish

  • Work with a construction crew to complete monitoring safely and efficiently
  • Perform fieldwork (survey, testing, or data recovery) and assist project managers with field tasks
  • Coordinate field crew progress, and daily data transfer
  • Prepare daily monitoring reports
  • Collect, organize, and perform QA/QC for own field data
  • Possibly assist with technical reporting
  • Demonstrate and maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and have the awareness to identify and resolve challenges in creative ways

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Experience with archaeological monitoring of construction sites is preferred
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred
  • 6 months experience with a range of field methods; including survey, testing, and excavation is preferred
  • Lead or assist in ensuring compliance with cultural resources regulations
  • Ability to be listed with relevant archaeological permits is preferred
  • Secretary of the Interior qualified is preferred
  • Leadership and supervision abilities is preferred, including problem solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads
  • Ability to travel to a location, conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to spend several hours per day, up to all day, away from vehicle

An employee in this position can expect an hourly rate of $21.00/hr. - $26.50/hr.
