The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) is an award-winning independent think tank working to accelerate solutions for a stable climate, sustainable resource management, and fair economies. Our work inspires better decisions and sparks meaningful action to help people and the planet thrive. We shine a light on what can be achieved when governments, businesses, non-profits, and communities come together. IISD employs more than 200 staff, who come from across the globe and from many disciplines. With offices in Winnipeg, Geneva, Ottawa, and Toronto, our work affects lives in more than 100 countries.
We are currently looking for a Communications Officer, Water to join our Water program.
IISD’s Water program comprises freshwater scientists, engineers, and a multidisciplinary team of policy researchers who work with governments, civil society, communities, and businesses to help them manage land and water for optimum, sustainable ecological and human benefits, while managing climate-related risks. Areas of work within the program focus on efforts towards sustainable watersheds, resilient agricultural systems, improved management of freshwater lakes and related natural, economic and social and information systems for these.
This work includes the Natural Infrastructure for Water Solutions (NIWS) initiative to scale up the use of natural infrastructure (NI) on the Canadian Prairies. This work involves working with watershed managers, municipal leaders, policy, and market experts on ensuring that a strategic effort to scale up effective natural infrastructure solutions is enabled by improved understanding, adoption, metrics, policies and markets for these projects.
Role
We are seeking a dynamic individual experienced in strategic communications (ideally in science or environmental issues) with a talent for making complex ideas accessible and persuasive to a broad range of audiences—from the general public and Indigenous communities to policymakers and scientists.
The selected candidate will be working to promote and effectively communicate the work of our Water team to audiences in Canada’s prairies (Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan) with the ultimate goal of influencing policy to improve the health of fresh water.
A significant portion of this role will involve communications for our NIWS project, which aims to scale up natural infrastructure solutions in Canada’s prairie provinces over the next four years.
