Responsibilities
Title: Communications Manager, People and Nature
Primary Location: Any EDF Office or Remote-U.S.
Overall Function
EDF is seeking a Communications Manager, People and Nature to manage communications plans and media outreach strategies and create content for a variety of different initiatives focused on natural resource management, sustainability, and social equity, including content creation across a variety of formats and platforms. The Communications Manager will help secure positive media coverage of the program’s work in top-tier, regional, and trade outlets in addition to handling other project management and communications campaign tasks.
Reporting directly to the AVP Communications, People and Nature, this position will have a strong background in natural resource management issues and play a critical content creation role across 6 different workstreams that make up the People and Nature team within EDF including agriculture, fisheries & oceans, ground water, coasts and watersheds, natural climate solutions, and global food systems and will have people management responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Cover a wide range of natural resource issues and develop relevant content including press releases, op-eds, blogs, videos, reports, and metrics in alignment with established strategies.
- Serve as the go-to editor for a variety of materials and provide quick-turnaround comments and edits, as well as the principal communications content creator for the People and Nature team, facilitating the delivery of a variety of deadline-driven outputs.
- Manage the development and execution of communications plans that identify key messages, target audiences, strategies, and multimedia tactics, working closely with People and Nature and EDF staff.
- Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
- Manage digital media assets, including blogs, LinkedIn, and Twitter accounts, including the story list, creating the publication schedule, working with authors to draft stories, editing posts, and developing original content.
- Identify opportunities related to natural resource issues and provide recommendations related to approach and strategy, where applicable.
- Develop and manage on-going, positive work relationships with key journalists, bloggers, editorial writers, and columnists.
- Secure favorable media coverage of People and Nature’s work in top-tier outlets, regional outlets, and trade press.
- Prepare program staff for media opportunities as needed.
- Collect and analyze campaign metrics and deliver relevant summaries on a regular basis.
- Guide, mentor, support, and develop at least one staff, as well as interns and consultants as needed.
- Travel on EDF’s behalf for no more than 10% of cumulative work time
- Additional relevant duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- 6+ years of relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree required. A Master’s degree may substitute for up to 2 years of experience.
- Strong background in natural climate solutions, agriculture, water, coastal issues, oceans and fisheries issues and food systems required.
- Experience in project management and coordination required.
- Experience leading project or program teams or managing staff required.
- Demonstrated success with deploying advanced tactics to engage and reach supporters as well as generating earned media, pitching, and follow-through with journalists required.
- Outstanding verbal, writing, presentation, research, copy editing, and AP Style proofreading skills.
- Strong proficiency in Cision, Google Analytics, Twitter Ads and Analytics, WordPress and/or Drupal required.
- Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet tight deadlines.
- Advanced ability to translate complex technical information into accessible communications materials.
- Proven ability to integrate and coordinate communications efforts across multiple organizations, teams, initiatives, and time zones.
- Strong ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and community organizations.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office, design principles, and communications applications.
- Proactive, meticulous attention to detail, and strong analytical skills.

USD $85,000.00/Yr.
Maximum Salary
USD $91,000.00/Yr.
