The Organization

Since 1944, Heifer International has supported more than 46 million Small Holder Farmer (SHF) families globally lift themselves out of hunger and poverty while caring for the earth in partnership with the communities we serve including Youth & Women. Heifer International is now accelerating its strategic approaches to closing the Sustainable Living Income (SLI) gap for 10 million additional SHF households globally by 2030.

In Kenya, we aim to reach 625,000 smallholder farmers, including women and youth against Heifer Africa's target of 6.745 million. Heifer does this through the Sustainable locally led development approach.

Function

The Communications Intern will support Heifer Kenya’s communications function by assisting in public relations, social media management, content creation, event coordination, and knowledge management. This role provides hands-on experience in storytelling, digital engagement, and organisational communication while building practical skills in PR, media engagement, and internal systems support. Additionally, the intern will play a key role in supporting the AYuTe Africa Challenge by assisting with planning and providing communication support (including content development, media engagement, and documenting impact stories) and contributing to the overall success of the AYuTe Challenge Kenya.

Responsibilities & Deliverables

A. Public Relations

  • Assist in drafting press releases, media alerts, and other PR materials.
  • Help in building and maintaining relationships with media contacts.
  • Monitor media coverage and compile media reports, including on AYuTe activities.

B. Digital Media

  • Manage and grow engagement across all Heifer Kenya social media platforms.
  • Create and schedule engaging social media posts aligned with Heifer Kenya’s communications strategy.
  • Track analytics and recommend improvements for digital communications.
  • Monitor social media trends and optimise content to boost visibility.
  • Undertake social listening to capture online conversations about Heifer Kenya’s programs, including AYuTe, and provide insights to the team.

C. Content Creation

  • Capture and share impact stories, photos, and videos from the field.
  • Assist in writing and editing blog posts, newsletters, and reports.
  • Help produce multimedia content (videos, podcasts, graphics) to showcase Heifer’s work and AYuTe innovators.
  • Ensure all content reflects Heifer’s brand voice and values.
  • Compile and design newsletters, reports, and publications.

D. Event Planning Support

  • Assist in planning and executing Heifer Kenya events, including workshops, webinars, and media briefings.
  • Provide communications and logistical support during major events such as the A2
  • Support in developing promotional materials and preparing post-event reports.

E. Knowledge Management

  • Support the maintenance of Heifer Kenya’s standard document filing system on MS Teams by assisting in sensitisation efforts to help staff appropriately file and access key documents.
  • Help maintain organised records of participants, sponsors, partners, and stakeholders across communications initiatives.
  • Assist in monitoring and reporting on staff utilisation of MS tools to strengthen knowledge sharing.
  • Ensure communications outputs (stories, reports, photos, videos, presentations) are archived and easily retrievable.

D. Other Assigned Tasks

  • Participate in team meetings and support ad hoc administrative tasks.
  • Maintain the communications calendar and coordinate key activities.
  • Assist the communications team with scheduling, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Draft and format presentations, reports, and other materials.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, digital media or a related field.
  • 6 months – 1 year of experience, including internships or volunteer work in public relations, social media management, content creation, event coordination, and knowledge management.
  • Some experience in management, including planning, media relations and managing content in a corporate or agency setting.
  • Experience using various analytics software.
  • Basic knowledge of graphic design and video editing is a plus.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and understanding of social media management.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to perform multiple tasks with minimal supervision.

  • Working with sensitive information and maintaining confidentiality.
