Genders & Sexualities Alliance Network is dedicated to achieving full equality and social justice for all Trans, Queer, and Two-Spirit+ people. We train youth activists to challenge multiple systems of oppression and develop leaders with a vision for social justice. We provide resources, training, and support to GSA clubs and emerging networks across the U.S., fostering safe schools and advocating for education justice. Office Hours
A regular work week at GSA Network is Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm. Start and end times are flexible, but must be able to attend predetermined team, supervisory, and full staff meetings.
Position Overview
The Communications Coordinator will play a key role in advancing the communications and narrative-building goals of GSA Network, with a focus on increasing capacity in trans-led or trans-focused organizing in the South and Midwest. This position is funded through the Trans Agenda for Liberation Narrative Lab grant, which is dedicated to supporting and amplifying trans narratives and strengthening communication strategies in these regions.
The Communications Coordinator will collaborate with GSA Network’s teams and external partners, to ensure that the stories and voices of trans communities are lifted up, both regionally and nationally. The role is designed to strengthen narrative capacity, build relationships with media outlets, and create impactful digital content to amplify the work of TQ2S+ young people.
Essential Duties and Functions
(The following is used as a partial description and is not restrictive as to duties required.)
Storytelling and Visual Design (40%)
- Collaborate with the Narrative Lab to integrate messaging trends into GSA Network's storytelling projects.
- Create visual assets and digital content that align with strategic messaging and enhance storytelling efforts.
- Experiment with various art mediums to diversify and expand messaging approaches for engaging young people.
- Develop digital content such as articles, press releases, blog posts, and social media updates to strengthen GSA Network's narrative presence.
- Assist in distributing press releases and media alerts, ensuring accurate and timely communication.
- Contribute to storyboarding processes, aligning organizational projects with long-term narrative shift goals.
Content Coordination and Social Media Management (30%)
- Manage daily content on GSA Network's social media platforms in line with strategic communication goals.
- Create, curate, and post visually engaging, brand-consistent content that supports GSA Network’s mission.
- Assist with implementing the communications calendar to ensure content is aligned and delivered on time.
- Engage with online communities by responding to comments and fostering interaction.
- Track and report on social media performance metrics, optimizing content based on audience engagement.
- Monitor social media trends and suggest creative ways to increase GSA Network’s online presence.
Digital Media and Content Development (20%)
- Draft, edit, and proofread content for digital platforms, including social media, website updates, newsletters, and email campaigns.
- Maintain content calendars, ensuring digital content is timely and aligned with communication goals.
- Monitor social media channels, engaging with audiences and responding to inquiries.
- Support website updates with fresh, accurate, and timely information.
- Maintain organized digital archives of media assets for communications use.
Administrative and Team Development (10%)
- Engage in daily communication using organizational tools (Slack, Box, Asana, Google Calendar).
- Implement a personal task management system with approval from your supervisor.
- Collaborate with team members on communications initiatives, providing support where needed.
- Submit and track expenses and timesheets in alignment with organizational procedures.
- Participate in staff initiatives and take on leadership* roles as needed.
*Leadership Team
GSA Network has developed The Leadership Team as a professional development opportunity for staff and a more equitable decision-making structure than the traditional non-profit. The goal of this team is to create a skills-building structure that will build the next generation of leadership and management capacity within the organization. After 6 months of employment, all staff members in good standing are eligible to join a Leadership Team Cohort.
Required Qualifications
- Commitment to trans liberation and understanding of challenges faced by trans communities, especially in the South and Midwest.
- 2-4 years of experience in communications, media relations, or digital content creation, focusing on narrative building, ideally in a nonprofit.
- Strong English writing, editing, and content creation skills, with the ability to adapt across platforms and audiences.
- Proven collaborator with a track record of building strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Familiar with the political and social contexts impacting trans communities, particularly around racial and gender justice.
- Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
- Experience with design software (e.g., Canva) is a plus.
- Familiarity with social media platforms and digital tools.
- Basic knowledge of content management systems (CMS) and website maintenance.
- Team player with the ability to contribute to organizational goals while managing individual projects.

Physical Demands
We want to make candidates aware of the physical demands required of the positions and welcome requests for reasonable accommodations to enable individuals with a disability to perform essential functions. The functions are:
- constantly operating work equipment, such as a laptop and applications, computer, printer
- participate in Zoom meetings
- communicate with staff and be able to exchange accurate information
- Ability to: use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; lift and/or move up to 25 pounds; and see close, at a distance, and adjust focus.
- Must be able to bend to access files and materials at floor level and use stool to reach materials on high shelving.
- Willingness and ability to travel nationally up to 15% of the time
- Must be able to manually operate and use a computer, phone, and other office equipment.
- Must be able to work at a desk for a prolonged period of time
Work Environment

- This position is fully remote, with a preference for candidates based in the South or Midwest. Up to 15% travel may be required for media engagements, training, and organizational meetings.
- A monthly stipend will be provided for internet and cell phone use.
- Employees must attend mandatory staff retreats, either in-person or virtually. If in-person, retreat location may be inside or outside, and the noise level may range from quiet to loud.
- Must be able to communicate clearly in English in complex contexts
- Must be able to able to read documents, enter and review data, and route mail to staff if needed
Compensation & Benefits
Salary is $33.65 an hour. This salary is non-negotiable*.
*In order to counter pay inequality and uphold internal parity, salaries are non-negotiable beyond the listed amount. Similarly, there are no title negotiations. Staff are eligible for salary increases annually and promotions based on organizational need and budget, equitable adjustments and cost of living.
Benefits include fully paid employee coverage and 75% dependent coverage for health, vision, and dental; and long-term disability insurance. Paid time off includes sick days, vacation, and holidays. In addition, we close our offices for two weeks in December along with quarterly seasonal breaks.
