Communications and Media Relations Manager
Location: GMT-6 to GMT+3 (US MTN Time to Eastern Europe/Eastern Africa Time)
OutRight Action International works at global, regional and national levels to eradicate the persecution, inequality and violence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people around the world. With staff in over 12 countries and headquarters in New York, OutRight builds capacity of LGBTIQ movements, documents human rights violations, advocates for inclusion and equality, and holds leaders accountable for protecting the rights of LGBTIQ people everywhere. OutRight has recognized consultative status at the United Nations.
OutRight is excited to launch this recruitment for a Communications and Media Relations Manager. The ideal candidate will be located in timezones GMT-6 to GMT+3.
The Communications and Media Relations Manager needs to be an excellent and precise writer who also has a thorough understanding of the media landscape. Under the supervision of the Communications and Marketing Director, the selected candidate will help develop and implement OutRight’s storytelling initiatives and media relations program, that proactively advances OutRight’s policy and programmatic agendas.
The position has the following core responsibilities:
Purpose Driven Storytelling
- Write high-quality content including rapid responses, talking points, press releases, speeches and remarks as well as newsletters, articles, and other marketing collateral for various stakeholders and departments.
- Ensure that all public information about OutRight’s initiatives is consistently branded, accessible, and communicated in OutRight’s brand voice.
- Work hand-in-hand with the Director of Communications and Marketing and the Digital Communications Manager to produce and promote cause-impact stories to inform and engage OutRight’s audience.
- Copyediting background and proficiency in AP style guide are strongly preferred.
- Keen understanding of how to write for a digital audience and best practices in the space are also preferred.
Media Relations
- Develop long and short lead media pitches based on OutRight’s internal editorial calendar.
- Identify, establish, and maintain professional relationships with national, regional and global media outlets for the purposes of story placement.
- Manage and maintain OutRight’s media relations database.
- Use excellent political judgment to accurately represent OutRight’s points of view.
- Respond to media requests in a timely and efficient manner.
- When appropriate, serve as an organizational spokesperson in lieu of a member of the senior leadership team.
- Manage an evolving media training curriculum for leadership, key spokespeople, and brand ambassadors.
- Elevate OutRight’s reputation and profile globally, and advance OutRight as a key resource for influential stakeholders internationally.
- Monitor LGBTIQ local, national and global events and tentpoles to assess any media partnership and secured coverage opportunities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 7 years experience in communications and media relations work in a similar environment.
- A deep political understanding of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) human rights in a global context, as well as the ever-changing means in which media is delivered and consumed.
- Superior writing and editing skills (in English).
- A dexterity to work with rapid response, deliberation and consultation in regard to communicating complex issues to diverse audiences.
- Dedication to accuracy and strategy.
- Fluency in using digital publishing and social media to advance missions.
- A masterful knowledge of the intricacies of political movements and the best strategies to engage with and within them.
- A degree in Communications, Journalism, Human Rights, or an equivalent field is preferred.
- Passionate commitment to the pursuit of liberation from persecution based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity or expression within the broader context of a desire to eliminate all intersecting forms of oppression.
- An ability to write and edit in a language other than English is highly desirable.
