PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Communications Officer is responsible for implementing a range of internal and external communication activities for distribution to audiences in country and primarily in Australia. This will include ensuring compliance with key messages and brand guidelines, to ensure that all ChildFund Timor-Leste communications are of a consistently high quality and reinforce the organisation’s key strategic priorities and identity and works closely with the Communications Team in Sydney to implement the ChildFund Australia content plan, as well as engaging the programs team. The Communications Officer will be tasked with developing, implementing and delivering a communications strategy for ChildFund Timor-Leste, ensuring timely delivery of content to support marketing and communications initiatives in Australia, and helping to build ChildFund Timor-Leste’s profile and reputation as an experienced, trustworthy, child-focused development aid agency. The Communications Officer will also be tasked with increasing the capacity of all staff to support the communications strategy.
KEY DUTIES
- Ensure that ChildFund communications positively and consistently reinforce ChildFund’s identity and key
- Develop content to promote ChildFund Timor-Leste’s work and brand in country and in Australia by Interviewing community members benefiting from ChildFund Timor-Leste’s work, and identifying stories of significant change and that are newsworthy;Producing photographs, video, and written stories in English about ChildFund Timor-Leste’s work for print and digital publications (annual reports, brochures, signage, magazines, social media and website).
- Develop and maintain relationships with media in Timor-Leste (TV, newspapers, radio stations, online news websites etc)
- Seek positive media coverage for ChildFund Timor-Leste’s work by providing newsworthy stories on a regular basis to media in Timor-Leste, and to ChildFund’s Sydney Communications team
- Ensure brand compliance and adherence for the organisation and any associated partners and donors to ChildFund projects
- Work closely with the Country Director of ChildFund Timor-Leste and promote a culture of sharing information between staff internally, and ChildFund Australia
- Provide material for ChildFund Australia publications and CFTL annual reports
- Produce a staff newsletter for ChildFund Timor-Leste at an agreed frequency
- Arrange translations of key documents for staff
- Establish effective systems for storing communications materials (e.g., photographs, publications).
- Ensure all communication activities comply with ChildFund policies, for example in the areas of child-safeguarding and consent, work closely with program teams to identify opportunities for developing communication networking and advocacy for child-focused issues and undertaking implementation of those initiatives where possible.
- Participate in external workshops, ChildFund Alliance working groups and other meetings relevant to the communication
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Tertiary qualifications in Communication or relevant discipline;
- Solid experience as either a journalist or public relations, or other communications-focused roles;
- Minimum 3 years working experience in roles with an INGO or similar organisation (preferred experience with child-focused programs or communication activities);
- Ability to write and speak English – at least intermediate English language skills required
- Ability to conduct interviews, and identify and produce newsworthy stories in English
- Experience in managing social media channels (eg Facebook)
- Basic skills in using design software to work on layouts and design of communications materials
- Planning and managing project budgets and ensuring effective use of resources and compliance with standards
- Understanding communications, public relations, media protocol
- Compiling and producing effective information about the organization and its activities
- Ability to build strong working relationships, internal and external to the
- Demonstrated capacity development experience of teams and individuals;
- Demonstrated awareness and experience working in partnership with and planning goals to closely support and link with national, provincial and district planning processes (timeframes, key documents, future initiatives);
SKILLS
- Strong presentation and facilitation
- Excellent time management and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities, and work to
- Experience working at the field level as well as high-level representation with national government, donors, NGO (international and national) personnel and departments;
- Demonstrated capacity development experience of teams and
- Demonstrated awareness and experience working in partnership with and planning goals to closely support and link with national, provincial and district planning processes (timeframes, key documents, future initiatives)
