POSITION TITLE: Climate Equity Senior Fellow

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Climate Equity Senior Fellow position will leverage key professional experiences at the intersection of government and community transformation work in order to advance equitable practices and outcomes in cities and communities. Eventually, this work will evolve toward a more decolonial praxis. This will be achieved primarily through two avenues 1) developing a curriculum and corresponding material for climate Equity practitioners who support collaborative work between government and community. This includes publishing research and previously unpublished but tested frameworks and methodologies, and 2) research and development on decolonial approaches for addressing the social systems and governance that continue to perpetuate injustice and imbalance with human and natural systems. The first pathway aims to contribute useful framing and development pathways to the growing Climate Equity field of practice, while the second seeks to expand upon it.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Training

  • Adapting Climate Equity materials for a training of practitioners
    • Developing curriculum and learning experience to build mindsets toward effective climate Equity praxis
    • Testing and evaluating the efficacy of the training
    • Supporting the network of trainees for two years
    • Identifying resources required to sustain the effort beyond the fellowship

Publication and Research

  • Publication of research and materials related to Climate Equity in partnership with Kapwa Consulting, LLC.
  • Ongoing research related to decolonial practice and praxis
  • Publication of short form articles and essays
  • Presentation of work at conferences and workshops
  • Manuscript development for a book on Climate Equity Praxis

Partnerships and Engagement

  • Engagement with National level organizations, initiatives and community of thought leaders on climate
  • Engagement with indigenous organizations and thought leaders on decolonial approaches to climate change
  • Participation and networking at national conferences and meetings to represent the work of the fellowship
  • Maintain good faith partnerships with organizations engaged in Climate Equity work and interested in partnering on various aspects of fellowship elements or deliverables

Strategic Advisement

  • Provide coaching and support to the PolicyLink Climate team as they deliver expertise in climate solutions (including state-level policy and advocacy, climate learning, research, water and climate, etc.) and racial equity
  • Ad hoc strategy advisement to philanthropy, field-level, and movement organizations working on climate equity issues

SKILLS, ABILITIES & KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED

  • Organizational change management experience in government

  • Understanding of anti-racist and decolonial praxis and experience applying to real-world settings

  • Development and design of curriculum

  • Authorship of Climate Equity tools and frameworks

  • Understanding of the context of climate Equity, climate Justice, and environmental justice networks, movements and initiatives

  • A rootedness in place based work

  • Ability to draw connections across sectors, fields, and areas of study to adapt messages and analysis to be legible to various audiences and translate complex messages

  • A community organizing background

  • An ability to be entrepreneurial and self-driven in work that does not have a blueprint

  • A deep sense of accountability to communities impacted by racism and colonization, specifically Black and Indigenous communities in the US and globally.

EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

  • 20+ years experience working on transformational change initiatives in community based organizations and/or government.

    • Proven track record of framework development and models which are utilized by climate and equity practitioners in the field.
  • Experience developing and implementing public policy programs and initiatives at the intersection of climate action and equity.

  • Experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and practices - both at the programmatic and administrative levels - that work to eliminate systemic institutional marginalization and promote inclusion and anti-racist practices.

ADDITIONAL CANDIDATE CHARACTERISTICS

  • Ability to travel approximately 20% of the time.
  • Able to manage a constantly evolving landscape, and shift priorities accordingly.
  • Passionate about work at the intersection of racial equity, climate change, decoloniality.
  • Sense of humor and a passion for prioritizing joy.

Compensation and Benefits

The annual starting salary range for this position is $215,000-230,000. PolicyLink provides a generous and comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, 401k match, ancillary benefits, access to Flexible Spending Accounts, commuter expenses, and generous leave benefits.
