Local Unit & Position Description
The role is within the Business Area Energy Systems and comprises the delivery of due diligence and owners’ engineering services of wind and solar projects to Advisory customers in Japan and other countries in APAC.
The candidate will join the Renewables Advisory team and will be located in our Yokohama, Japan office. The Renewables Advisory team consists of approximately 30 staff located in Japan, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand. In addition to these countries, our Asia Pacific energy and renewables advisory consulting practice has principal offices in Australia, China and India.
The main activities of the role of the Civil Engineer would be:
- Perform Project Engineering tasks including Owners Engineer, Independent Engineer, Due Diligence reviews, Lenders Technical Advisory and related scopes of work;
- Feasibility and front-end engineering addressing:
- Support structures (Wind Turbine Generators and Offshore HV Substations);
- Offshore installation, O&M, CAPEX/OPEX and scheduling (WTG, structures, cable);
- Engineering support during the lifecycle of a project. This may include pre-construction and project execution;
- Offshore Substructure Concept Design;
- Preparation of Design Basis and Specifications;
- Geotechnical interpretative report (determining soil profiles and associated geotechnical parameters)
- Seismic site response analysis;
- Metocean review and specification;
- Corrosion protection design (ICCP and SACP);
- Design risk register;
- Equipment review and specification including ITT support;
- Design/Drawing review;
- Fabrication and Construction monitoring;
- Techno-economical analysis (LCoE analysis);
- Working as part of the Project Engineering group, focusing on the civil / structural component whilst communicating and integrating with those responsible for other project aspects;
- Work on multiple projects, managing own time to meet deadlines;
- Plan, project manage, execute and report on all aspects of Owners Engineering delivery and related scopes of work;
- Technical report writing;
- Increase order intake with existing customers and introduce new services;
- Identify local customers, acquire new customers and expand using their network;
- Develop a consultative selling framework, focusing on what the customer wants and associated added value instead of pushing DNV products and services;
- Liaising with a wide range of customers from developers, plant owners to financial institutions to discuss results and risk mitigation;
- Producing proposals and working with colleagues to build existing and new service areas in relation to power systems, storage and renewable energy;
- Assist in the preparation of technical papers or presentations.
Position Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree Civil (Geotechnical) or Structural Engineering;
- A relevant masters and/or post-doctoral degree will be looked upon favorably.
Knowledge, skills and experience required for the position are:
- Passionate about Renewables;
- Relevant industry experience in the design and/or construction of solar or wind power plants;
- Knowledge of prevailing Japanese civil standards;
- Proficiency in a range of international structural design standards, particularly those in common use in the Japanese market (including JSA, JSCE, BSLJ, JIS, IEC, DNV, API and ISO etc.)
- Proficiency in SESAM (or similar) and other common structural analysis programs
- Experience reviewing geotechnical site investigation and metocean reports and laboratory test results
- Understanding of typical design, fabrication and installation requirements in APAC (particularly in Japan) for wind turbines both offshore and onshore.
- Experience in seismic design
- Driveability analysis
- Strong technical and organisational skills;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills in Japanese and English, including ability to write clear and detailed technical reports in English;
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment;
- Ability to build and maintain relationships with customers;
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with diverse people – customers and co-workers;
- Good organisation and time management skills, ability to cope with a wide variety of tasks;
- Understanding and following safety requirements for accessing and working on wind farm, solar plant constructions sites or high voltage installations domestically and internationally.
Experience of the following would be an advantage:
- 3-5 years of structural and/or geotechnical engineering design experience. Experience with large scale wind turbine foundations, ground mount PV power plant.
- Understanding of fatigue in structures.
- Master of Science – Civil or Structural Engineering preferred plus 3+ years of structural engineering design;
- Prior research or design experience with wind turbine foundations both offshore and onshore
- Prior research or design experience with marine or offshore structures, including site and metocean conditions
- Knowledge of geophysical and geotechnical investigation techniques;
- Understanding of cyclic degradation of subgrade materials;
- Understanding of geotechnical and civil site design aspects of wind and solar farm projects;
- Understanding of foundation systems for utility scale onshore or offshore wind turbines;
- Understanding of foundation and mounting structure systems for utility scale photovoltaic installations;
- Understanding of common Solar PV foundation systems and geotechnical aspects of design;
- Prior research or design experience with wind-induced dynamic loading of Solar PV structural support systems;
- Appropriate Professional Engineer certification;
- Demonstrated project management skills, including budget control, customer care, management of sub-contractors and progress against project milestones;
- Experience of developing proposals for work, including budgets, appropriate contractual terms, and undertaking negotiations on scope and price with customers;
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or Matlab, etc;
- Proficiency in MS Office programs (primarily Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), plus an aptitude for analysis of large amounts of measured data via custom analysis packages.
Physical abilities
- Normal office environment, regular walking, sitting, bending, twisting, standing and reaching;
- Some domestic and international travel to other company office locations, site locations, client offices and conferences;
- Occasional work outdoors including site visits, traveling by car and walking on uneven terrain.
