Civil Engineer

About the opportunity

SWCA is seeking an early career, Civil Engineer to work in Pittsburgh, PA. SWCA is a nationwide environmental consulting firm and is 100% employee owned. The position will entail travel and short-term overnight efforts to collect field data and meet with clients. The candidate must have a strong skill set in Hydrologic and Hydraulic design, AutoCAD Civil 3D, as well as a working knowledge of GIS principles.

This requisition can hire for two positions:

  • Assistant Staff Civil Engineer – Typically with up to one year of professional experience and expertise
  • Staff Civil Engineer – Typically with up to two years of professional experience and expertise.

Those with 3-5 years of professional civil engineering experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

This is a full time, hourly position in our Pittsburgh, PA office, or eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with 1-2 days a week in the office. Position level will be determined based on experience at either the Assistant Staff or Staff Civil Engineer level.

What you will accomplish

  • Participate in the engineering design, reporting, and development of construction plans for oil and gas and solar developments.
  • Participate in field work to assess existing site conditions, erosion and sediment control inspections, and perform geomorphic surveys.
  • Develops construction plans within the AutoDesk Civil 3D platform.
  • Perform hydraulic, hydrologic, and water quality assessments, modeling, and analysis in support of the above listed projects.
  • Communicates and works with the Project Manager to keep projects on schedule and on budget.
  • Attends and participate in annual internal design training meetings to support personal skills growth and career planning.
  • Ability to work independently and with Project Managers and multi-task regularly in a fast-paced environment with multiple changes; work under pressure and meet tight deadlines.
  • Completes individual tasks of moderate complexity or duration with oversight
  • Serves as an Engineer in Training (EIT) on projects
  • Primarily completes tasks under the direction of a Task Lead or PM
  • Performs basic design tasks
  • Assists in the preparation of permit applications, drawings, and CAD work
  • Assigns tasks to and coordinates with technicians or administrative staff
  • Edits specifications
  • Performs research and investigations
  • Designs a complete project, system, component, or process
  • Prepares complete draft project documents
  • Communicates with client or agency under PM direction
  • Troubleshoots routine problems independently
  • Oversees the implementation of the safety plan in the field

Experience and qualifications for success

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering or related degree.
  • 0-1 years experience in civil engineering design, specific to site development.
  • E.I.T certification.
  • Experience developing construction plans in AutoCad Civil 3D.

Preferred:

  • 2 or more years experience in civil engineering design, specific to site development.
  • Experience with RIVERMorph, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, Hydraflow Hydrographs, and other hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and analysis software.
  • Previous GIS experience.

Additional Information:

  • Ability to travel 30% is required.

An employee in this Pittsburgh, PA - based position can expect the following rates: Assistant Staff Civil Engineer- $25.00/hr - $32.50/hr.; Staff Civil Engineer- $28.50- $37.00

Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
