About the Position
The Center for Black Educator Development is hiring a Founding Chief of Staff (COS) to join our leadership team. Reporting to the Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COS will support the CEO on strategy and planning, special projects, and executive coordination. The COS will also lead strategic business initiatives, advise on program management, advise on internal and external communications, and ensure cross-functional collaboration.
This is an exciting time to join the organization as we embark on a new strategic plan. The role has been created in response to the growth CBED has experienced and the need to achieve greater internal efficiencies, improved communication, and continuous improvement across the organization. The COS role is fully remote and can reside anywhere in the United States.
Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Organizational Leadership
- Serve as a valued thought partner to the CEO and the executive leadership team; support them in understanding how business decisions impact the staffing, systems, and sustainability of the organization.
- Support the CEO and leadership team in evaluating growth opportunities and business risks for new and existing programming and services.
- Work with leaders to set goals and strategic priorities as well as metrics for success. Track metrics and evaluate progress against them.
- Oversee the development of board materials, including collection of data from across the organization, and follow up and resolve on action items.
- Serve as a liaison to the Board of Directors as needed. Assist in onboarding new board members, monitoring term lengths, and supporting the CEO in researching and recruiting new board members.
- Build and maintain strong, collaborative working relationships with board members, funders, and partners, and develop and cultivate strong relationships across the organization.
- Serve as an adviser on internal and external communications.
CEO Support
- Prepare the CEO for upcoming meetings and ensure he has the information necessary to be productive, engaged and to make critical decisions. Attend meetings with and/or in place of the CEO and follow-up with stakeholders as needed.
- Ensure the CEOs' involvement in project or decision-making processes takes place at key times, where their input and authority are most needed.
- Serve as an advisor to the CEO on policies, strategic planning, goals, budget development, and human resources issues.
- Make recommendations to the CEO concerning his time management, prioritization, delegation, and organization.
Project Management
- Provide executive oversight of major initiatives, working cross-functionally and with the leadership team; align internal and external resources to ensure successful project completion.
- Advise on organization-wide systems and processes to ensure the organization is operating as efficiently as possible within a remote environment.
Qualifications
- A deep commitment to CBED’s mission, vision, and core values.
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA preferred.
- At least seven years of direct, relevant work experience
- Superior organizational skills with excellent attention to detail
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to gather and synthesize complex information, identify insights, and develop actionable recommendations
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate to diverse audiences and influence stakeholders at all levels
- Project Management, Business Office, Human Resources, financial analysis, communications, and/or data analytics experience
- Comfortable handling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines
- Ability to adapt and work in rapidly changing, white space environment with undefined solutions and can navigate ambiguity with ease
- Strong customer service, communication, and problem/conflict resolution skills, balanced by a sense of humor.
- High EQ with the ability to build strong relationships and influence stakeholders.
