YOUR CAREER OPPORTUNITY
In the Controller role you’ll lead and oversee all aspects of the accounting operations, development and/or enforcement of internal controls, financial policies, budgets, compliance and procedures of MEDA’s Community Development Financial institution (CDFI), Fondo Adelante. In this collaborative, dynamic, team leadership and relationship-building Controller role, you’ll handle all things accounting. Whether you’re handling financial statements, banking operations or taxes, your accounting, analytical and communication skills will help you to win and make a significant contribution to the organization’s continued growth and success.
The CDFI Controller is part of Fondo Adelante’s team, a Latino-led and Latino-focused CDFI servicing the Bay Area with a focus in the Mission District in San Francisco. Through Fondo Adelante, MEDA’s goal is to provide coaching, technical assistance, and access to equitable and affordable capital to small businesses, to maintain vibrant and healthy Latino-, immigrant-, and family-owned local businesses. Given the rapid displacement of Latino(a)s in the Mission District, this is a crucial position in supporting MEDA’s strategic efforts to preserve the neighborhood as a supportive community for Latino businesses, residents, and institutions.
Specifically, you will:
- Partners with the Director of Finance to manage the accounting and financial activity for Fondo Adelante
- Manages closing activity for Fondo Adelante and collaborates with Loan Servicing Manager to ensure that the loan portfolio is accurately represented on financial reports
- Collaborates with Corporate Accounting Team to ensure Accounts Payable, Payroll, Cash and Revenue transactions are processed and recorded properly
- Ensures all financial reports are accurate within the business line and conforms to GAAP/GAS
- Oversees the preparation and communication of monthly, quarterly, and year-end internal financial reports for Fondo Adelante
- Oversees the Fondo annual audit and a key liaison with external auditors, funders, and regulators for their audits and examinations
- Responsible for Loan Accounting, including reconciling Loan Receivable transactions, monitors and adjusts Loan Loss Reserves and updates Allowance for Loan Losses
- Initiates problem solving and solutions orientation, makes adjustments to financial reports and statements as needed
- Prepares and updates Fondo Adelante annual budget and grant budgets in collaboration with VP of Fondo Adelante
- Collaborates with MEDA staff to generate and process invoices for grants received by Fondo Adelante (Lending and / or Business Development Teams)
- Monitors compliance related to regulatory, grant and funder reporting, including, but not limited to assisting in preparing funder reports and reporting for annual State Lenders License and CDFI certification, sharing quarterly and annual reports with funders, etc.
- Ensures Compliance responsibilities and tasks are updated in V-Comply, Salesforce, and other relating platforms, and assigned to appropriate staff
- Collaborates with Development and Fondo Adelante Director by providing financial information such as budgets and projections for grant proposals
- The Controller works with the VPFA to evaluate potential and current funding sources, and define Fondo Adelante’s loan programs pricing.
- Member of the REL Credit Committee for loans funded under the Racial Equity Lens (REL) Loan Program
- Supports VP of Fondo Adelante in preparing and presenting financial reports for Fondo Adelante’s Board of Managers
YOUR KEYS TO SUCCESS
To perform successfully in this role, you will need to leverage these key qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field, or equivalent experience. Master’s Degree and/or licensed CPA a plus.
- 7 years of progressive experience in finance and 3 years of experience in staff management.
- 5 years of experience in nonprofit/loan fund accounting and/or auditing.
- Experience with DownHome and the CDFI / Lending industry, and MIP software a plus.
- Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting. Ability to analyze and handle complex operational and financial situations.
- Strong interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills; initiates effective communicating key data to a diverse audience, including presentations to senior management, board and external partners.
- Ability to mentor and lead staff and foster a team environment, and use the organization’s mission and values to lead and inspire teams.
- Strong interpersonal and communication (written and oral) skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board or other outside partners.
- Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.
- Spanish fluency preferred (not required)
