About the Oversight Board

The Oversight Board makes binding and independent decisions about the most challenging content issues on Facebook and Instagram.  Members of the Board include Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark, Tawakkol Karman, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Michael McConnell, Director of Stanford’s Constitutional Law Center, and may other diverse leaders and thinkers from around the world.  The Board issued its first decisions in January 2021.

The Oversight Board Administration is the team of full-time staff who supports Board Members in carrying out their duties. The Administration has a presence in London, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., and operates with a global scope.

Role:

Joining the Oversight Board Administration is a chance to be part of an organization which is leading on some of the most challenging issues facing the tech industry and society.

Under the supervision of the Deputy Head of Case Screening, this role will play a crucial role supporting the Oversight Board’s Case Selection Committee. This position will review cases submitted to the Oversight Board, analyse, and shortlist cases for the Case Selection Committee’s review based on criteria set by Committee. This person will review case content, categorize it using various metrics, and produce reports to inform different parts of the organization on case screening and selection. Additionally, this person will undertake research on context surrounding cases and develop policy and human rights analysis to support the Case Selection Committee’s work.

A key component to this role will be strong judgement skills and awareness of human rights and content moderation issues. Strong writing skills are a must.

The Case Screening function is responsible for:

  • Supporting the Oversight Board in setting and applying criteria for case selection purposes;
  • Undertaking case screening and supporting selection by the Case Selection Committee;
  • Providing periodic analysis and reporting on case selection processes and decisions;
  • Undertaking research on context, including social-political developments and trends on social media;
  • Developing policy and human rights analysis, including risk analysis
  • Drafting internal materials to support case selection, as well as Oversight Board decisions.

Skills and Experience

The Oversight Board Administration values diversity of experience. Candidates should have a strong combination of several of the following skills, competencies and experience:

  • Degree educated, preferably with at least some specialisation in or experience working with human rights and technology. Experience working with content moderation is preferable.

  • 2+ years professional experience.

  • A flexible mindset and ability to work in a fast-moving environment.

  • Strong written and oral communications skills in English.

  • Excellent collaboration skills and ability to work as part of a small team

  • Experience of working in a diverse multinational workplaces is preferable.

  • Knowledge of multiple languages preferable
