Botanist

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Mid-level Botanist with experience in natural resource management and biological studies for our Sacramento, CA office. This Natural Resources position has opportunities to work on projects with SWCA’s six other California offices and across the West.

In this role you will be expected to perform rare plant surveys, vegetation mapping, wetland delineations, habitat assessments, desktop analysis for potential resources, as well as grow into leading and managing larger field efforts, work with other technical staff, and produce high-quality technical reports and permitting documentation for a variety of public and private sector clients/projects.

Our Natural Resources program works on diverse natural resources related projects across many business lines, including renewable energies, utilities, infrastructure, transportation, habitat restoration, and mitigation banking. In addition, the Sacramento office offers a unique work environment and specializes in natural resources, cultural resources, and permitting.

This is a regular, full-time, salaried position. Pay rate will be based on individual qualifications and experience. SWCA offers a team-oriented work environment, competitive salaries, and a competitive benefits package, including an employee stock ownership retirement plan (ESOP).

What you will accomplish

Conduct field surveys, prepare field equipment, identify and plan field logistics, photograph and document field site conditions, habitat, species and landforms. Provide oversight of survey implementation and data management.  Review and interpret biological data and the primary literature. Use GIS spatial databases, topographic maps, aerial photographs and tools for identification of land cover and other geographic features.  Coordinate meetings with local State and federal agencies and non-governmental organizations.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Botany, Biology, Ecology, or plant-related field required
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in plant-related fieldwork required
  • Knowledge of California biogeography and vascular plant diversity preferred
  • Environmental permitting experience preferred
  • Knowledge of botanical survey and monitoring techniques and ability to learn and implement new protocols
  • Valid driver’s license and the ability to drive to sites as needed
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often  at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
