Systemic Justice is hiring a

Senior Treasurer

🇳🇱 Europe, NL 📝 FULL-TIME

Systemic Justice is looking for a Senior Treasurer to help develop our governance, provide financial oversight, and support an organisation that wants to truly live its values of anti-oppression, justice, and intersectionality as it works to fulfil its mission.

About Systemic Justice

Systemic Justice is a new NGO that will partner with organisations working on racial, social, and economic justice to bring about change through strategic litigation.

Strategic litigation is a powerful tool that can be used alongside advocacy, campaigning, and policy work to help bring about systemic change. However, litigation is underutilised in movements working to address the structural inequalities in our society.

Centring affected communities in joint litigation, Systemic Justice will help broaden access to judicial remedies for those fighting for justice and equality. This will help dismantle the power structures that underpin and fuel racial, social, and economic injustice.

About the roles

We are looking for an individual to join our board as Senior Treasurer.

Systemic Justice is a young organisation looking to build its governance and developing its practices and working methods with intention by grounding them in our values of anti-oppression, justice, and intersectionality. This includes active questioning of perceived “best practices” in the NGO field, and exploring different ways of creating the accountability, power sharing, and compliance structures needed. The Board will be integral in helping us make this happen together with our team.

As a member of the Board, we expect that you will participate in 2 Board meetings per year, participate in our organisational retreats once a year, and assist the team in relation to specific areas of your substantive expertise. We expect the time commitment to be 1 day per month on average. However, part of the initial journey is for the Board to develop its working methods and processes with us, so this is not set in stone.

Board members are compensated for expenses made in the course of exercising their duties, including travel expenses for Board meetings. We can offer compensation to those for whom this could help take away any barriers in applying for the role.

The statutory Board term is three years, after which members may be reappointed for another three-year term.

What we hope you’ll bring

  • Extensive experience in non-profit financial management and/or accounting practices, including experience working with auditors;
  • Knowledge of and experience with the Dutch regulatory framework for non-profits;
  • Understanding of the funding environment for non-profit organisations in Europe

Beyond this, we are looking for an individual who

  • Shares our values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, and justice, and for whom operationalising these in practice is an exciting prospect.
  • Is ready to actively participate in shaping their role and the Board’s role in Systemic Justice’s governance structure. In doing so, they need to come prepared to question existing models and practices and be ready to jointly develop a vision for, and the subsequent practices to operationalise, a governance model that is firmly grounded in our values.
  • Is excited about Systemic Justice’s mission and about contributing to its fulfilment.

Please note that Systemic Justice works in the CET time zone +/- two hours. Being located inside this time zone span is considered a pre-requisite.

Deadline and how to apply

The deadline for applications is 10 October 2022, 23:59 CET. If you are interested in applying and have questions about the role, please contact us.

We ask that you submit your CV and – instead of a traditional cover letter – a written response to these three questions:

  • Why do you want to join Systemic Justice’s Board?
  • What would you consider the most important role of a Board for an organisation like Systemic Justice?
  • If you could change one thing about the current practices in non-profit governance, what would it be?

Our work is rooted in our foundational values of anti-oppression, intersectionality, and justice. We invite anyone who does not have lived experience with systems of oppression to reflect on their suitability for this role before applying, and to address this as an introduction to their responses to the above questions if they choose to apply.

Remuneration: Board members are compensated for expenses made in the course of exercising their duties, including travel expenses for Board meetings. We can offer compensation to those for whom this could help take away any barriers in applying for the role.
