Summary of Role:
The Business Development Manager (BDM) – Renewables Origination, Australia will be responsible for delivering a viable pipeline of greenfield renewable energy developments in Australia for future construction. The BDM will determine the key regions of the market to target for new greenfield prospects and using their arsenal of business development initiatives and communication tactics, lead initial landowner engagements to sell the commercial proposition and secure land tenure for new business.
Your regulatory, policy and commercial market insights will guide strategic decision-making and support the origination of competitive, sustainable renewable energy projects and the growth of Mainstream’s business in Australia.
What you will do?
Business Development: Renewables Pipeline Origination
- Lead the greenfield renewables business development strategy to originate a pipeline of prospects using quantitative and qualitative analysis of the Australian energy market (Market Intelligence)
- Utilise internal GIS & energy modelling teams to identify land, produce conceptual layouts and generate new leads with landowners suitable for renewable energy development consistent with the business objectives.
- Using your business development, persuasive communication skills and knowledge of wind, solar & BESS infrastructure, lead the initial approach to landowners and pitch Mainstream’s development credentials & commercial proposal to secure land tenure.
- Conduct initial environmental & grid connection fatal flaw screening on prospects, drawing upon market intelligence and the internal engineering resources of Mainstream for Go/No-Go decision in line with internal approval processes.
- Negotiate and secure property agreements with landowner(s) to provide appropriate rights to develop, construct and operate renewable energy facilities.
- Develop, maintain, and promote the business case for each prospect until hand-over to the Development Manager.
- Maintain effective communication with all external stakeholders and the development team and prepare and present progress reports to senior management.
Business Development: Market Intelligence / Route to Market
- Lead quantitative and qualitative analysis of the Australian energy market, accruing intelligence on market, regulatory, policy and commercial drivers across solar, wind, and BESS sectors.
- Provide regular briefings to management on energy market fundamentals, including quantifying impacts of regulatory change to pipeline origination strategy and existing projects.
- Support PPA / auction analysis for existing projects, including validating and modelling key bidding assumptions and responsibility for realised price forecasts for Mainstream’s existing projects.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with commercial functions within the wider Mainstream group and co-ordinate market research activities and regular knowledge sharing across regions.
- Assist development managers and project finance team on key energy market inputs for the financial model as required.
What we require?
- Degree qualified in a relevant discipline.
- Significant renewable energy market experience (10+ years) in Australia.
- A self-starter with a "can-do" attitude who demonstrates hands-on accountability for their area of responsibility and motivated to drive new business deals.
- Ability & tenacity to generate business leads using techniques such as cold-calling, letters, drafting commercial proposals and in-person landowner engagements.
- Experience in dealing with landowners and a focus on relationship management.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the renewable energy market, policy and regulations.
- Good understanding of the development process including site identification, constraints analysis, grid connection and permitting process in Australia.
- Knowledge and experience in negotiating and securing land tenure desired, but not essential.
- Excellent commercial, analytical and quantitative skills.
- Excellent persuasion skills, a good networker and a good negotiator.
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Ability to use Microsoft software packages such as Word, Excel, Outlook is essential.
- Driver’s license required.
- Flexibility to travel interstate as required.
