Associate Project Environmental Scientist - Hydrologist

SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding and looking for a dynamic individual to support the growing Water Resources (Water) technical team as an Associate Project Environmental Scientist - Hydrologist. SWCA’s Salt Lake City team is seeking a Hydrologist who is motivated to work in a team environment, serve as a technical expert locally (Great Basin, Arid Southwest, Pacific Northwest) and nationally (throughout SWCA), contribute to and review challenging water resources projects, and use their expertise to craft a rewarding professional career.  This is an hourly, non-exempt, part-time position that can be hybrid or remote, based on experience.

What you will accomplish

• Conduct hydrologic analyses for a variety of clients and projects including basin planning and studies (focus on Great Salt Lake and Colorado River basins); NEPA analyses for pumped storage, water development, etc.; water supply assessments; and watershed restoration and/or management efforts.
• Use statistical tools and hydrologic modeling tools to develop complex water balances, investigate groundwater and surface water interactions, and evaluate hydrologic impacts associated with future climate and water management scenarios.
• Design field studies to describe existing hydrology in systems of many sizes and scale.
• Manage large high-frequency datasets and make effective use of publicly available datasets for projects (e.g., USGS, state water rights databases).
• Serve as a resource expert in hydrology, watershed processes, and field techniques.
• Assist in technical writing for environmental documents with a primary focus on hydrology and water resources management.
• Lead and assist with efforts to create analytical data tools, dashboards, or other visual and/or written reporting deliverables, for both internal and external clients.
• Ensure project quality, schedule, and budget objectives.
• Take initiative, resolve problems, and identify improved procedures to assure client needs are met effectively.
• Work closely with resource teams, project managers, and senior leadership throughout the company to promote SWCA’s business interests in adherences to its mission, vision, and values.
• Willingness to learn, have fun, and grow into increased management responsibilities.

Experience and qualifications for success

• Minimum of a graduate degree in Hydrology, Watershed Science, Hydrogeology, Geology, Water Resources, Environmental Engineering, or related field
• Minimum of five (5) years of experience in the water resources field including university or graduate work or comparable combination of education and experience.
• Proven experience with hydrologic analyses, field efforts, and statistical analysis of large complex data sets.
• Excellent organizational and verbal/written communication skills
• Ability to solve complex problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.
• Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting, and to engage in independent creative and critical thought.

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience in the Great Salt Lake basin or Colorado River basin.
• Previous experience in environmental consulting.

An employee in this Salt Lake City, UT-based position can expect an hourly rate of $30.00/hr. - $38.50/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
