Associate Project Environmental Scientist

SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for an experienced Associate Project Environmental Scientist to support projects in the Southeast Sub-Region. SWCA offers a unique work environment and specializes in mining permitting and compliance, renewables energy permitting, and ecological restoration.  You will be a core member of the natural resources program supporting large and/or complex projects and quality control for project deliverables. You will support and participate in projects related to mining permitting and compliance, the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, other resource planning/permitting regulations, and/or natural resource disciplines. You will support and assist in developing mining permits, 404/401 permits, biological field studies, biological assessments, project monitoring, compliance reporting, and other deliverables. In addition, you will work closely with regulatory agencies to support needs during permitting processes.

This is a full-time (can be remote), salaried position, available for distributed work within the Southeast Sub-Region.

What you will accomplish

  • Assist with conducting a variety of natural resources field studies, including threatened/endangered species assessments, wetland delineations, and avian/wildlife surveys
  • Conduct fieldwork, organize and transfer field data, and write technical reports and permit applications related to mining permits, Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and other resource planning/permitting, and/or natural resource disciplines
  • Assist in the writing and development of written deliverables related to project work
  • Provide GIS mapping for projects
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork
  • Conduct groundwater and surface water sampling for mining-related projects
  • Execute data collection in the field through self and others
  • Safely operate SWCA-owned and rental vehicles, including 4-wheel drive vehicles
  • In the field, oversee a crew and/or work independently on standard tasks
  • Coordinate land access, field crew progress, and data transfer and management
  • Complete field data QA/QC
  • Conduct research
  • Perform basic data synthesis and analysis
  • Apply broad knowledge of regulations or guidelines to projects
  • Communicate with clients or agency representatives
  • Oversee the implementation of the safety plan in the field

Experience and qualifications for success

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Botany, Environmental Science, Fish and Wildlife Science, Ecology, or a related field
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience supporting and conducting mining permit and compliance fieldwork and wildlife/environmental fieldwork.
  • Completion of a wetland delineation training course or demonstrated equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and environmental survey experience in the Southeast Sub-Region
  • Knowledge of groundwater sampling techniques
  • MSHA Part 46/Part 48b certification

Additional Information

  • Ability to travel to a location, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds
  • Travel to project sites will be required for the position, with fieldwork

An employee in this Jacksonville, FL based position can expect an annual salary of $62,400.00_–$80,080/yr__. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
