About the opportunity
SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Associate Project Botanist with experience in natural resource management and biological studies for our Las Vegas, Nevada office. We are seeking a candidate who is looking to develop or continue a long-term consulting career that combines high-level technical expertise, strong writing skills, business acumen and the potential for leadership. Responsibilities may include writing technical reports, leading and participating in field surveys, natural resource planning, permitting assistance, and coordinating with a multi-disciplinary team.
This is a permanent, hourly, full-time, regular position, reporting to one of SWCA’s Project Managers out of our Las Vegas or Reno, Nevada offices.
What you will accomplish
- Develop project management and technical lead skills on a variety of biological resource projects.
- Conduct a variety of natural resources studies including targeted and botanical surveys, threatened/endangered species assessments, habitat assessments, and summary biological survey reports.
- Organize, review, and transfer field data, and write technical reports and permit applications related to the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, local municipal and county regulations, and other resource planning/permitting relevant in Nevada.
- Support our restoration team in wildfire planning and forestry line efforts.
- Report writing may reach 50% of the position's required time commitment.
- Work closely with a project team to complete biological resource management tasks.
- Work closely with SWCA’s other resource scientists, planners, on natural and cultural resource projects throughout the company.
- Leads projects/tasks from start to finish, with guidance (PM for small to medium projects or Task Lead for medium to large projects)
- Plans and coordinates staffing for technical mobilizations and reporting
- Prepares draft scopes and budgets for small to medium projects, or contributes to large proposals
- With guidance, interfaces with clients and agencies related to specific tasks to ensure needs and objectives are met
- Contributes to technical standards for office or sub-region
- May supervise; coaches others within the office
- Prepares and ensures implementation of the safety plan
Experience and qualifications for success
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science, or a related field.
- Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in biological surveys and resource management, in either the public or private sector.
- Experience working with scientists, planners, engineers, contractors, and agency specialists.
- Proficiency in writing natural resources technical reports.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient with the identification of Nevada flora.
- Experience in preparing reports and permits as primary author for variety of project types and sizes.
- Experience in forestry, silviculture, forest ecology, wildfire/fuels management, and/or fire ecology.
- Demonstrated business development success, including proposal writing, budget development, and client interaction.
- Desire to learn and grow into increased project-management and supervisory responsibilities.
- Willingness to be trained in GIS, if not already proficient.
Additional Information:
- Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain.
- Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
It is anticipated that low to moderate travel will be required for the position, with field work sometimes reaching 50% of your time.

An employee in this Nevada_-based position can expect an_ hourly rate of $30.00 to $38.50. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
