About the opportunity
SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for an Associate Project Biologist in San Antonio, TX to be part of our well renowned Freshwater Mussel surveying team. As a core member of the Natural Resources program, you will take a lead a collaborative role in pursuing project opportunities, managing large projects and clients, and supervising and mentoring staff. Our Central Texas operations offers a unique work environmental and specializes in Land Development, State and Local, Electric Transmission, Renewable Energy, and Disaster Recovery and Resilience Projects.
This is a regular, full-time position with the possibility of a hybrid schedule.
What you will accomplish
- Manage and advise clients on project compliance requirements related to National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, and other resource planning/permitting, and/or natural resource disciplines relevant in the region
- Prepare requirements related to USACE permit applications, biological field studies, mitigation plans, biological assessments, environmental compliance plans, environmental monitoring and inspection, and other deliverables
- Monitor and maintain project schedules, budgets, and quality
- Identify creative or alternative paths for resolution of environmental issues or mitigation constraints
- Provide staff mentorship
- Attend and/or present at local, regional, and national conferences and forums. Support agency needs during project process
Experience and qualifications for success
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, botany, environmental science, natural resource management, or related field
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in environmental consulting, or ecological studies
- Qualified to identify and conduct surveys for freshwater mussels in Texas
- Experience managing all aspects of projects, including developing and implementing budgets, schedules, scopes of work from pre-field tasks to final report preparation
- Open water diver certification
- Ability to operate an outboard motorboat in both freshwater and saltwater environments. State boater certification if applicable
- Prior primary report authorship in a natural resource consulting context for a variety of project types and sizes, regions, and agencies
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completed a Texas Freshwater Mussel ID short course
- Experience with environmental permitting and in-field construction compliance experience with Federal, State, and local regulations
