ASSOCIATE – ENERGY TRANSITION, FOSSIL FUEL TRANSITION, INDONESIA

E3G is recruiting for an Associate to join its Fossil Fuel Transition team to develop and lead work on accelerating the energy transition in Indonesia. The Associate will be based in Indonesia and will be required to work remotely.

The role

This new role will support engagement with the diplomatic community, policymakers, civil society partners, international organisations, business, and academics to accelerate Indonesia’s transition away from coal power and towards clean energy.

The position will include working with civil society partners to provide advice to diplomatic actors and embassies based in Indonesia, as well as engaging government stakeholders nationally and internationally around supporting Indonesia’s transition away from coal and accelerating renewables deployment. It will also include working with and through international networks and multilateral fora such as ASEAN, G20 and COP to achieve broader regional and global coal-to-clean outcomes, in close collaboration with E3G colleagues.

Delivering a rapid, managed transition of the global power system from coal-to-clean, not via gas, is a fundamental condition to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement. E3G’s Fossil Fuel Transition team mobilises diplomatic actors to drive real-world, real-economy progress on ending the global use of the coal power and transitioning to clean energy. E3G identifies opportunities for influence and interventions, collaborates with civil society campaigns and partners, and fosters international diplomatic alliances to create a world where no new coal is built, and where existing coal is replaced by clean, affordable energy to enable a climate-safe world.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic insight and thought leadership regarding Indonesia’s energy transition and political economy, working through a mix of networks, information exchange, data analysis and horizon scanning, and contributing to cross-E3G analysis and activities on energy transition diplomacy.

  • Produce internal and external analysis, tailored briefings and communications materials based on recent data and analysis around Indonesia’s energy transition and key risks and opportunities in accelerating the coal-to-clean transition.

  • Lead E3G’s engagement with civil society networks, policy makers, multilateral development organisations and business stakeholders working on Indonesia’s energy transition, in partnership with international coalitions and under the direction of E3G’s leads on global coal-to-clean transition strategy.

  • Develop joint strategies with partners for mobilising and supporting Indonesia to become a regional champion within ASEAN on delivering the COP28 goal to transition away from fossil fuels, and triple global renewables capacity and double energy efficiency rates by 2030.

  • Build and maintain relationships with Embassies and other diplomatic actors based in Indonesia, providing incisive briefings and advice on energy transition topics.

  • Engage and build relationships with key decision makers and government stakeholders within Indonesia to support Indonesia’s transition away from coal and accelerate renewables deployment.

Experience and Skills

  • Degree in a relevant discipline (e.g., economics, politics, international relations, environmental science, geography).
  • Good strategic understanding of Indonesia’s climate and energy policy, and of related regional dynamics on energy across Southeast Asia.
  • Relevant professional experience and a track record of activity in a relevant setting, e.g., working on energy policy, foreign policy, energy finance or a related field in a government or international institution, civil society, think tank or research institute.
  • Excellent Bahasa Indonesian and English, written and spoken.
  • Good personal networks on energy transitions across Indonesia and Southeast Asia, at relevant expert, civil society, diplomatic, and/or governmental level.
  • Able to operate confidently in an international context, with an ability to engage decision-makers across government, business, finance and civil society.
  • Excellent networking, analytical, writing and presentational skills. Able to distil information from a range of sources, develop strategic messages and convey information convincingly to key audiences, both in writing and verbally.
  • Good interpersonal skills, able to work effectively as part of an international team as well as independently.

What we offer

This role is configured as an Associate on a consultancy basis and is offered on a 1-year fixed-term contract, with the possibility of further extension. The role may be either full-time or part-time. There may be potential for the role to be considered under an Employer of Record contract either initially or in due course.

The role is required to be based in Indonesia and will work remotely. Location in another Southeast Asian country may be considered for the right candidate.

E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in their desired location. E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance or visa support.

A remuneration package competitive with the non-profit sector will be offered.
