Third Generation Environmentalism is hiring an
ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, CLIMATE DIPLOMACY AND GEOPOLITICS, BERLIN, BRUSSELS, LONDON, OR WASHINGTON
E3G is looking for an experienced foreign policy practitioner and thought leader to lead its growing Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics Programme.
As a recognised global leader in climate diplomacy, geopolitics and international governance, E3G is increasing its capacity to shape the integration of climate change into geopolitical relations and make international governance regimes fit for purpose in a climate changed world.
The position is ideally based in E3G’s offices in Berlin, Brussels, London or Washington other locations may be considered for exceptional candidates.
Context and Focus
E3G is an independent think tank working globally to achieve a safe climate for all and is consistently ranked among the world’s most influential environmental think tanks. E3G is rapidly growing its international work across a range of subject areas and venues.
Staying within the Paris 1.5C temperature goal requires the complete transformation of the global economy in three decades to reach net zero CO2 emissions and ensure resilience against the worsening impacts of climate change. This transition is the most ambitious common global project ever attempted. Delivering this will require fundamental changes to how countries work together and to international regimes.
In a world increasingly defined by geopolitical rivalries climate change has come of age as a “top table” diplomatic issue. Climate change now shapes the geopolitical context and the geopolitical strategies of major players like US, China and EU must fully integrate their climate change interests and actively manage the inevitable geopolitical tensions caused by the climate transition.
Effective climate action requires high-levels of international cooperation and effectively managed competition. This goes beyond ensuring a strong UN climate treaty to making international regimes as diverse as trade, finance, development, humanitarian assistance and security fit for purpose in a climate-changed world.
E3G has a strong track record of over 15 years of delivering innovative diplomatic, policy and institutional changes at national and international level.
E3G’s Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics team has staff based in the UK, US and across the EU. It also draws on, coordinates and amplifies expertise and research from across E3G programmes on clean economy, sustainable finance, fossil transition, climate risk and political economy.
E3G undertakes analysis, develops practical policy and institutional proposals. E3G convenes track 1.5 and 2 convenings on multiple issues and is a regular advisor to governments and international institutions on political analysis, strategy and diplomatic priorities.
E3G builds and convenes large-scale coalitions & networks to align diverse actors to strengthen climate cooperation and manage geopolitical risks to climate action.
E3G works to shape public views in key countries on national interests, the benefits of deeper international engagement and shape broad foreign policy priorities.
E3G’s Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics work is global in scope but has a particular emphasis on interactions between US, China and Europe and their relationships with developing and vulnerable countries. E3G is expanding the scope of its activities to include more middle-income economies. E3G plays an active role in working with governments and non-state actors around and into the G7, G20, UN, International Financial Institutions and the UNFCCC.
As climate change action shifts from target setting to delivery, and geopolitical turbulence increases, E3G is looking to recruit an experienced foreign policy practitioner to take a leadership role in E3G’s Senior Management Team in the strategic development, delivery and management of this crucial Programme area.
