Assistant Staff Landscape Designer

About the opportunity

SWCA is looking for an Assistant Staff Landscape Designer who is passionate about both design and the environment, and who has the skills to graphically articulate their ideas. Our design team collaborates closely with scientists, restoration specialists, hydrologists, and engineers in our offices across the country to develop dynamic solutions that enhance natural processes and create connections between natural and cultural landscapes.  You must be highly motivated and well versed in landscape design and ecological systems.

The ideal candidate will have experience in ecological design, park and trail system design, green infrastructure, and the development of visual simulations. In addition, you must be interested in working for a fast-paced multi-disciplinary environmental firm, collaborating on a diverse portfolio of project types and scales, and in taking initiative to produce high quality work products under the direction of SWCA supervisors.

This position will be based out of either our Amherst, MA, or Half Moon Bay, CA, office. The applicant will be expected to be in the office a minimum of one day a week for in-person collaboration and development and should be able to work regular office hours with occasional travel to and from various project locations.

What you will accomplish

  • Apply ecological principles to the resolution of challenges posed by the built environment
  • Apply strong conceptual thinking to communicate design ideas both graphically and verbally
  • Collaborate on a diverse portfolio of projects, across the country, from park design to wetland restoration, and from visual impact analysis to the development of pollinator habitat for green energy clients
  • Progressively take more responsibility for managing clients, budgets, and contracts
  • Progressively take more responsibility for leading and guiding technical elements of work
  • Support and facilitate public outreach associated with design projects
  • Provide construction bid and implementation support

Experience and qualifications for success

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Landscape Design, or related environmental field
  • Minimum of one (1) year of design experience
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Strong interest and passion for the natural environment

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Two (2) or more years of experience with environmental restoration, passive recreation and trail design highly preferred
  • Proficiency in the AutoDesk suite (AutoCAD, Civil3D, 3DS Max, Infraworks, etc.)
  • Proficiency with Adobe CS suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere, etc.) highly desirable
  • Watershed modeling, photorealistic rendering, and fly-through animation capabilities
  • Candidates considering a Landscape Architecture licensure track encouraged
