We are seeking an Assistant Staff Environmental Scientist – Water Resources to assist with execution of projects in the Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.  This position involves a diverse workload including participation in a variety of water quality and water analysis projects -- including watershed managements plans, water quality sampling projects, and communicating results of studies through effective report writing.  The position also offers progressive opportunities in project compliance of local, state and federal environmental regulations.

The applicant should be able to work independently for 40 or more hours per week, on a sometimes unpredictable and fluid schedule. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in accurate data collection, assist in field-based surveys and monitoring activities, communicate effectively with team members, and complete other tasks as assigned. This is a regular (with benefits), part-time position, and located in the SWCA Salt Lake City, UT office.

What you will accomplish

  • Support the water resources team in planning, field data collection, and report writing.
  • Assist in the writing and development of written deliverable related to project work.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written.
  • Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools during fieldwork.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Wetland Science, Biology, Plant Science, Soil Science, Fish and Wildlife Science, Ecology, Water Resources, or a related environmental science field.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in wildlife/environmental fieldwork.
  • Experience with technical writing for environmental documents.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge and environmental survey experience in Utah and the surrounding region.
  • Familiarity with mapping software such as ArcGIS and GPS devices.
  • Basic knowledge of project permitting, impact assessments, proposal preparation, environmental planning, wetland delineation/mitigation.

Additional Information:

  • Valid driver's license.
  • Must have a flexible attitude towards scheduling and planning based on ever-changing project needs.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain.
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Occasional and sporadic travel may be required for the position, with opportunities for extended field work.
