Assistant Staff Architectural Historian

About the opportunity

Do you want to build a solid foundation for your career as an architectural historian, historian, or preservation planner?  Are you interested in working on resources ranging from log cabins to dams to mid-century modern buildings in the west?

SWCA is seeking an Assistant Staff Architectural Historian for our Sacramento, CA office. The individual selected for this position will carry out research, field survey, and report writing tasks under the supervision of an Architectural Historian and Project Manager. Projects are predominantly driven by compliance with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the National Environmental Policy Act; opportunities may also arise for grant-based project work.  Currently, most of our staff are working remotely with the likelihood of transitioning back into a physical office later this year. Some projects may require travel and overnight stays. This is a full-time, regular (with benefits), hourly position based out of our Sacramento office with hybrid work schedules available.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct or help conduct reconnaissance and intensive architectural resources surveys, which will include photographic documentation, writing architectural descriptions, and historical research.
  • Help prepare historic documentation, including, but not limited to, site records, report sections, mitigation
  • Research and prepare historic context statements.
  • Evaluate resources under National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) significance criteria.
  • Prepare or help prepare historic resources technical reports and nominations to the NRHP.
  • Assist with conducting historic building conditions assessments and developing preservation plans.

Experience and qualifications for success

Required

  • A Bachelor’s Degree ideally in history or a closely related field plus a minimum of two months experience in cultural resources management.
  • Ability to complete a Masters degree within 6 to 9 months of starting in this position.
  • A basic knowledge of federal and state cultural resource and historic preservation laws and practices, particularly Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Experience identifying general and regional architectural forms, styles, and trends.
  • Demonstrated writing skills
  • Ability to work on projects or tasks independently or as part of a team

Preferred

  • Basic knowledge of the history and architectural history of the Western United States
  • Basic to intermediate nowledge of State Historic Preservation Officer submittal requirements and operating procedures
  • Previous experience conducting field surveys, evaluating and reporting on architectural resources
