SWCA has an opportunity in our San Diego, California office for Assistant Staff Archaeologist who will also assist with administrative support. As an Assistant Staff Archaeologist, you will be an integral member of our collaborative team.

Working closely with Project Managers across various disciplines, the successful candidate will answer inbound emergency calls and emails, on behalf of our client, and communicate directly with the client and their subcontractors. In this role you will be expected to perform desktop cultural resource reviews and web-based queries for cultural resources throughout southern and central California. Work will involve utilizing a variety of online tools including ArcGIS Online, Field Maps, Google Earth, Smartsheet, and historic topographic map and aerial imagery data viewers. Reviews will be performed in a fast-paced environment working within a larger team. The candidate will have the opportunity to assist in after-hours, on-call support for inbound emergency calls and emails. There is potential for cross training in this role that vary from cultural resource reviews to coordination and support, report/site record writing, and fieldwork.

Administrative support will require phone and email communication with clients as well as assistance with office logistics coordination, safety, and administrative tasks. Additional tasks include management of inbox traffic and answering an urgent customer hotline. This is a regular, full-time hourly position, and pay will be based on individual qualifications and experience. The position reports to the San Diego office and is in-person.

Our San Diego office offers a unique work environment and specializes in Natural Resources, Cultural Resources, and Permitting.

What you will accomplish

  • Answer phone/email requests for environmental support as well as office main phone line.
  • Support an inbox including sorting requests and forwarding to appropriate teams.
  • Conducts background research for archaeological studies.
  • Ensures that appropriate preliminary research is conducted and organized prior to fieldwork.
  • Communicates regularly with the Project Manager to ensure that a project’s timetable is met.
  • Coordinates with client personnel, subconsultants, archaeological monitors and Native American monitors, as needed.
  • Support the efficient deployment, successful project data collection, and safe return of our field staff across Southern California.
  • Duties will include organizing safety gear, securing travel, outgoing and incoming forms and data, and tracking expenditures and reconciling billing for these projects.
  • Serve as the Office Safety Representative Administrator and help coordinate safety initiatives.
  • Help coordinate SWCA quarterly Gives Back events.
  • Administrative tasks such as office supply orders, mail/FedEx, picking up groceries, maintaining break room, meeting coordination, taking company vehicle for service, ordering lunch and other office-related tasks.
  • Takes initiative, resolves problems, and creates improved procedures to ensure that tasks are completed in the most effective and efficient manner.
  • Maintains SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance; is motivated to identify and resolve problems in creative ways.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • A bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, or a closely related field is required.
  • Participation in an accredited field school or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in cultural resources management (CRM) on a variety of project types, sizes, regions, and agencies.
  • Experience drafting and reviewing of field documents, site forms, and reports preferred.
  • Must enjoy working in a fast-paced, cross-functional team environment while working on interesting and challenging projects with tight schedule
  • Preferred candidate will have proficiency in MS-Office, MS-Outlook, and Internet/Intranet technologies; ArcGIS, Field Maps, Smartsheet and GoogleEarth familiarity a plus.
  • Able to work independently and collaborate with a variety of colleagues and clients
  • Will need to have a valid CA driver’s license
