SWCA Environmental Consultants is expanding their cultural resource team and looking for dynamic individuals who are following their passion in delivering the highest-quality project work. Our Pittsburgh office offers a unique work environment and specializes in complex cultural resource management projects.

SWCA’s Pittsburgh Office is seeking 6 to 8 field archaeologists (HR title = Assistant Staff Archaeologist) to support SWCA’s projects throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia, as well as across the country. This is a field-based position and candidates should understand that travel will consist of 90 to 100 percent of the time. Per Diem is typically $59/day. The position comes with full health, dental and vision benefits, as well as enrollment in SWCA’s Employee Stock Ownership Program. The anticipated work schedule will consist of six, 10-hour days, with Sundays off (hotel and per diem provided for Sunday) or 8 days on (Wednesday to Wednesday) followed by 6 days off. A key element of your job will be to independently supervise archaeological survey crews in the field.

What you will accomplish

  • Conduct archaeological fieldwork including monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.
  • Assist with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Trimble units.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Ideal candidates will be based in proximity to the Pittsburgh Office.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field or and experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring.

  • Ideal candidates will have entry level (0 to 1 year) to early career (1 to 3 years) experience.

  • An accredited Field School Certification is preferred.

  • Preferred candidates will have experience working in the Mid-Atlantic.

  • Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.

  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required.

  • Supervise a small crew while conducting archaeological fieldwork. This includes:

    • independently assigning and directing the activities of others on behalf of SWCA, often in remote areas without immediate guidance from senior managers, to ensure quality and on-time delivery;
    • ensuring that employees understand their responsibilities and delegated tasks and being held accountable if crew members under your supervision are not performing their activities correctly, productively, and safely;
    • serving as a conduit of communication between employees and senior managers, including communicating issues to relevant senior managers;
    • receiving and resolving complaints from employees in the field; and
    • monitoring team productivity and providing timely performance feedback, including deciding when disciplinary action is necessary and delivering discipline.

An employee in this Pittsburgh, PA-based position can expect an hourly rate of $23.25-$29.75/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
