Assistant Project Environmental Planner

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants’ is actively seeking to fill an Assistant Project Environmental Planner position located in Farmington, NM. This position is a career growth opportunity to join SWCA’s expanding environmental planning practice. You will be responsible for performing environmental impact planning and regulatory planning, facilitating public and government land management coordination, and participating in, and providing regulatory oversight during, the development of permitting applications and approval documents.

The role is a permanent, full-time position that will be embedded within a key client’s oil & gas office, and this role is expected to be part of the client’s regulatory management team. The ideal candidate is expected to be in-office minimum 3 days per week and located within a commutable distance from the office in Farmington, New Mexico.

What you will accomplish

  • Assisting projects involving the preparation of local, state, and federal permitting applications.  These will address the development of a wide variety of projects for private developers and stakeholders, including local land use approvals.
  • Participating in projects that include: consultations with local zoning/planning officials and local land use permit applications, biological resource assessments and constraints analyses, state and federal endangered species act consultations, National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents, and Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting -- including Nationwide Permitting and CWA Individual Permits.
  • Support a variety of oil & gas project types representing the client.
  • Assist staff with preparation of NEPA related analyses documents such as Environmental Assessments (EAs) and contributing documents.
  • Assist staff with federal and state permitting applications. (i.e. extensive BLM permitting, completion reports, sundrys, Notice-of-Stakings and Applications for Permits to Drill).
  • Work may include project compliance support, budget and milestone coordination, and proposal or scope-of-work development support.
  • Work closely with, and be mentored by, industry leading environmental planners and permitters.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental planning, biology, ecology, environmental studies or related field. Master’s degree a plus.
  • 3 years of relevant environmental experience required. Permitting experience a plus.
  • Good written, logic, organizational, oral, analytical, and document management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, including an ability to work on more than one project at a time.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure with schedule constraints.
  • Ability to gauge project workload and manage priorities.
  • Willingness to learn, have fun, and grow into increased management responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational and computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, Power Point) and Adobe Acrobat.

Candidates with more than (5) years of relevant and project management experience are encouraged to apply and may be considered at a higher level. Candidates with less than (3) years’ experience will also be considered.

An employee in this Farmington, NM-based position can expect an hourly rate of $26.50 - $34.00/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
