Assistant Controller

Overview

The Assistant Controller is responsible for general accounting activities, cash management and banking, financial reporting, budgeting and reforecasting for Reading & Math, Inc. This includes ensuring a timely month end close process; In Kind collection and reporting; and grant, program, state and company-wide budgeting and reforecasting. This individual will provide financial leadership within the accounting department as well as across the organization. Responsible for adherence to GAAP; FASB pronouncements; applicable federal, state, county and city laws; AmeriCorps rules and regulations; OMB regulations including 2 CFR 200; and internal control compliance. Observe confidentiality of all accounting, payroll, employee, member and organizational information.

Responsibilities

  1. General Accounting and Cash Management (50%)

    1. Responsible for auditing and reviewing general ledger inputs from payroll, accounts payable, grants accounting to ensure compliance with GAAP, FASB pronouncements, all financial grant requirements, including OMB regulations, 2 CFR 200 and grant specific requirements.
    2. Accountable for completion and recording of admin allocations, ensuring clean cutoffs.
    3. Perform monthly and year-end accounting close procedures.
    4. Monitor and forecast cash balances to ensure cash on hand to meet payroll and vendor payments.
    5. Accountable for timely completion of bank reconciliations
    6. Manage balance sheet to ensure proper reporting and timely correction of open items.
    7. Collect, complete, and review all balance sheet account reconciliations
    8. Manage unrestricted net assets to confirm only authorized uses.
    9. Direct, train, mentor and review the work of Staff Accountant
    10. Update financial policies on an annual basis or as needed; communicate changes to leadership and others in the company as needed.
    11. Create allocations as needed and update at least quarterly.
    12. Work with other finance managers to ensure procedure documents for all accounting areas are accurate and maintained.
    13. Create and distribute appropriate financial data to various company stakeholders, providing feedback and answering questions as needed.
    14. Create and maintain effective and efficient processes that allow the timely and accurate completion of month end processes
    15. Develop processes and procedures to collect and document needed in kind contributions.
    16. Lead annual financial audit, including financial statement and report creation
    17. Assist with 401K audit.
  2. Budgeting and Analysis (50%):

    1. Lead grant budgeting processes to ensure consistent and complete budgets.
    2. Lead company budgeting process, including development of timelines and seeking inputs from various stakeholders.
    3. Direct, train, mentor and review the work of Financial Analyst
    4. Complete reforecasts on at least a quarterly basis for both grants and company budgets; provide information to responsible parties as well as grantors as needed.
    5. Develop and maintain consistent metrics used in the budgeting process
    6. Work with company leaders to identify, create and report key business metrics
    7. Prepare ad hoc analysis as needed and/or requested
    8. Work with other staff in the planning for new programs and grant development.

Qualifications

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting

Minimum Experience

  • Minimum of 5 years progressive accounting experience; technical accounting experience required, exposure to accounts payable and payroll also preferred.

  • Familiarity with AmeriCorps programs a plus.

  • Experience with government funding, grant reporting and fund accounting methodologies required

  • Experience in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting

  • Knowledge of GAAP, FASBs and 2 CFR 200

  • Experience leading a team, working across an organization and with company leadership

  • Advanced knowledge of Excel

  • Working knowledge of database and accounting computer application systems.

  • Oracle NetSuite and UKG experience is a plus.

  • Demonstrated competence in complex problem solving, staff supervision and process improvement.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, time management and organization skills.

  • Professional demeanor, good interpersonal skills, self-motivated and customer service orientation.

  • Proven leadership skills.

  • Must have the ability to travel locally, statewide and nationally to attend meetings
