Assistant Avian Biologist - Crew Lead

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Avian Biologist - Crew Lead position in our New Mexico-Four Corners Natural Resources program. This position will assist with natural resources field studies focused primarily on multi-year pre- construction and post-construction avian-based surveys for wind energy projects. Other responsibilities may include other general wildlife and threatened/endangered species surveys. This position is a regular full-time field-based positions and will require overnight travel. Qualified candidates who want to work remotely out of NE New Mexico will be seriously considered.

What you will accomplish

• Lead field efforts that include conducting avian point-count surveys and post-construction carcass searches for wind energy projects.
• Ensure tasks are completed in the most effective manner with a high-degree of quality and reliability.
• Record accurate data on field site forms and input information into a digital tablet.
• Implement and maintain safety and communication protocols for all project tasks
• Maintain a collaborative work environment and positive morale between SWCA staff, subcontractors, and clients
• Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, and other maps and scientific tools and equipment.
• Work as a member of a team, as well as independently to make decisions and complete tasks in the most effective manner
• Flexibility and willingness to learn and implement company procedures and new concepts.

Experience and qualifications for success

• A minimum of a Bachelor`s degree in fish and wildlife science, biology, ecology or related field required.
• Ability to identify western raptors, including eagles and other avian species.
• One-year experience conducting avian surveys or wind project post-construction monitoring.
• Ability to use digital tablet for GPS navigation and recording of field data.
• Willing to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather conditions.
• Ability to problem solve in the field or office with little to no supervision.
• Must be able to conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in severe weather conditions.
• Experience overseeing field technicians, preferred.

An employee in this Albuquerque office -based position can expect a salary of $20.50 - 26.50/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
