Water Mission’s Malawi program is a non-profit charity organization that supports the Malawi Government in the provision of safe water to needy communities across the country. Since its establishment in 2010, Water Mission’s Malawi program has worked with Government ministries and installed nearly 80 community-based solar-powered water systems benefiting well over 501,000 people in various communities ranging from villages, trading centers, schools, and other institutions. More than 20 districts have benefited from the provision of safe water. Water Mission’s Malawi program also actively serves in the WASH cluster under the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, along with other NGOs in the context of disaster preparedness, relief, and management.
What is the opportunity?
Under the direction of the Finance and Administration Manager, of Water Mission’s Malawi program, the Assistant Accountant will provide support to the Malawi Country office by preparing financial statements, accounts, budgets, processing, and preparing Tax Returns. The role works closely with the Finance and in-country teams. The role will be at Water Mission’s Malawi program offices in Lilongwe, Malawi, with occasional travels up-country.
A successful Assistant Accountant will:
General Responsibilities:
• Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
• Engage and participate in prayer before and after team meetings.
• Lead and participate in biblically based staff devotions.
• Processing payments for goods and services.
Other Responsibilities:
• Posting accurate financial transactions in the Accounting System
• Handling petty cash float, including managing disbursements and reviewing supporting documents.
• Reconciling staff cash advances to ensure proper accountability of funds.
• Ensuring that all staff adhere to financial policies and procedures.
• Remitting timely tax returns to Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).
• Submitting statutory payments and returns to regulatory bodies in a timely manner.
• Reconciling payable accounts.
• Reconciling bank accounts with cash books monthly
• Preparing monthly balance sheet schedules for review by the Finance Manager on a timely basis.
• Maintaining the Fixed Assets Register
• Conducting monthly physical inventory counts and investigating variances with system inventory.
• Preparing financial reports in accordance with relevant accounting standards.
• Preparing the financial information required for internal and external audits.
• Responding to audit queries.
• Filling of financial documents systematically.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Impeccable level of integrity in handling Donor funds in an accountable and transpar-ent manner.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, or ICAM (CA Level 1), ACCA (Applied Knowledge Lev-el), CIMA (Advanced Diploma)
• Must be a registered member with ICAM.
• Good working knowledge of relevant International Accounting standards, GAAPs, IP-SAS.
• At least 3 years of experience in Financial Management.
• Experience working with International Non-Government Organisation, is preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including articulating ideas and feedback constructively.
• Proficiency in MS Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and SharePoint) and hands-on experience in an accounting information system preferably NetSuite accounting sys-tem.
• Excellent analytical and decision-making skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback constructively.
• Legal authorization to work in Malawi without sponsorship.
