Archaeological/Cultural Resources Crew Leader

About the opportunity

SWCA's Sheridan, Wyoming office is seeking a full-time Staff Archaeologist to join our team of cultural resources specialists to assist on a variety of projects across Wyoming, Montana, and the surrounding region. We collaborate regularly with our partnering offices and this position would offer the opportunity to travel beyond the Rocky Mountain/Plains region. Your role will be to assist project archaeologists and principal investigators during field efforts. You will also have the opportunity to work on office-based tasks such as report writing, logistical support and laboratory tasks as needs arise.

Compensation and Schedule: Starting at $21.00/hr.

Work schedule varies but sessions do not typically exceed 8 to 10-days (10-hour days). Per diem, housing, and company vehicles provided. Mileage reimbursement is provided for work-related use of personal vehicles.

Positions will be filled as soon as qualified applicants are identified.

What you will accomplish

  • Assisting in supervising and leading a crew while conducting archaeological monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.
  • Communicating with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff regularly to provide field status updates.
  • Participating in technical research and writing and data QA/QC.
  • Assisting with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using Esri-based applications.

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field required
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring required; experience in the Rocky Mountain Plains Region preferred
  • Previous field supervisory experience preferred
  • Completed accredited field school experience is highly preferred
  • Ability to be listed on federal and state cultural resource permits in Wyoming is preferred
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often  at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

Additional Information:

  • Ability to travel an estimated 75% of the time.
  • Willing to travel overnight for extended periods of time.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and ability to pass a motor vehicle record screening.

An employee in this Wyoming office -based position can expect an hourly wage of $21.00-27.00/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.
