Job Overview

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Substitute Instructor combines English language instruction with academic instruction and acculturation to teach international students.  This role teaches pre-university, undergraduate or graduate level Academic English through listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar lessons on an interactive, synchronous online platform.  The ESL Substitute Instructor teaches group sessions in a communicative approach to English language instruction, tutors, and assists with curriculum development as needed.

The ESL Substitute Instructor has outstanding oral and written communication skills and demonstrated flexibility.  He/She/They will work with students one on one and in groups so excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and outstanding interpersonal skills with cultural sensitivity toward students and staff from diverse backgrounds is critical.  The ESL Substitute Instructor is a team player who can work independently, is comfortable multitasking, can change priorities to fit business needs, and manages time efficiently.

Essential Functions

Teaching

  • Prepare lessons, deliver online instruction, and grade approximately 10 – 20 hours per week

  • Observe and support other ESL Instructors, providing substitute teaching and tutoring where needed

  • Follow relevant and appropriate lesson plans with clear objectives that align with specified student learning outcomes and overall course format

  • Facilitate effective online interactions that support English proficiency development that provide effective teaching strategies and meet the individual needs of students

  • Utilize the full range of AC Live technological capabilities to support effective teaching strategies that meet the individual needs of students

Curriculum Development

  • Work in a team environment with the American Collegiate Live team to assist with curriculum development
  • Assist with the build of course materials in Canvas

Security

  • Comply with Shorelight Written Information Security Policy, and all other Shorelight Information Security Policies and Procedures
  • Take responsibility for any Shorelight assets assigned to you
  • Promptly report any security events, incidents or weaknesses to Shorelight Security

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in TESOL or closely related field, such as (but not limited to) Applied Linguistics or Adult Education
  • 2+ years of related experience, including 1+ year in an academic ESL/EFL program
  • Access to reliable internet connection
  • Eligibility to work in and travel freely to and from the United States without sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrable knowledge of applied linguistics, second language acquisition, language-teaching methodologies, assessment, and curriculum/lesson planning; TESL certifications (CELTA, DELTA, Bridge, or Oxford)
  • Overseas experience or experience teaching in multicultural/multilingual classrooms
  • Competence in a foreign language
  • Experience teaching ESL/EFL online
  • Expertise in ESL/EFL writing instruction
