About the opportunity
SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for an experienced Corporate Controller/Vice President of Accounting. The Corporate Controller is responsible for all areas relating to general ledger (G/L), month-end close, and preparation of financial statements. This position will be responsible for maintaining adherence to GAAP accounting principles and ensuring accurate and timely delivery of financial statements. The Controller leads and develops five individuals from the accounting department. In addition, this position is responsible for setting the department’s strategy, while ensuring day-to-day work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner. Furthermore, this position addresses tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting activities including banking relationships, year-end audit preparation and support of budget and forecast activities.
What you will accomplish
- Reporting to the CFO, the Corporate Controller will be a key financial leader and a close partner to the CFO, and other members of the leadership team throughout the company
- This person will oversee corporate consolidation, cash management, payables, credit and collections, fixed assets and leases, and the development and implementation of related systems, controls, procedures, and policies
- The Corporate Controller will lead accounting policy and ensure compliance with GAAP and other applicable rules and laws and assist the Vice President of Finance with preparing the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting
- Manages and reviews all journal entries prior to the release of monthly financial statements
- Oversees intercompany, acquisition and multi-currency accounting
- Functions as the subject matter expert and liaison with external accountants and auditors, and interact with external auditor regarding annual audits (eg. Financial, Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR), etc.)
- Direct and oversee all aspects of the accounting and control functions of the organization producing timely and accurate monthly financial statements
- Responsible for the development and implementation of all company methods, procedures, and practices to safeguard the assets of the business and to properly reflect its financial results
- Set the strategic direction for the development and deployment of financial and reporting processes that ensure compliance with GAAP and mitigate risk
- Accountable for the accurate and timely interpretation of GAAP accounting standards and the accurate incorporation of such interpretations into the company’s financial records
- Working with Senior Leadership you will assess current accounting operations and offer recommendations for improvements, and implement new processes
- Oversees and controls the general accounting activities for the enterprise, including recording company transactions, classifications, and reconciliation of account balances
- Serves as a key partner on strategic business initiative discussions by understanding and communicating the accounting and finance implications of various growth strategies and transactions
- Functions as resident expert for various accounting systems, and owns in the operation of the company’s accounting systems (eg: Deltek Vision, Elevia E-Invoice, Emburse Chrome River, etc.)
- Directs the work activities of A/P, A/R, and G/L teams and conducts regular performance appraisals
- Ability to lead a remote team and work effectively in a distributed work environment
Experience and qualifications for success
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA (MBA preferred)
- 12+ years related accounting experience
- Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven success with your interpersonal skills that bring groups together to solve problems as a cohesive team
- Expertise in reasoning through complex accounting matters
- Expertise with financial analysis and reporting
- Merger and acquisition accounting experience preferred
- Previous experience designing and implementing robotic process automation a plus
- International accounting experience preferred
- Professional services experience; and/or architecture, engineering, construction (AEC) experience is a plus
- Previous experience with Deltek Vision or similar project-based ERP system is a plus
- Previous Deltek Vision experience

An employee in this Phoenix, AZ office-based position can expect a salary of $143,520–$192,400/year. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
