About the Position
The Accounting Associate reports to the Controller and is responsible for all day-to-day accounting activities. The Accounting Associate will support the month-end close, financial reporting, and the year-end financial audits. The ideal candidate is able to work independently, highly organized, a team player, has strong analytical skills, and technical knowledge of the accounting system Sage Intacct and QuickBooks).
Responsibilities include:
- Supporting the monthly close process, including bank and investment reconciliations, journal entries, grants and contributions accounting, accounts payable, and payroll processing
- Developing and documenting business and accounting procedures, policies, workflows, and dashboards
- Optimizing internal work processes to fully utilize capabilities of accounting software and minimize manual interventions and workarounds
- Assist Controller in preparing and disseminating timely and accurate financial information to management and other stakeholders
- Assist Controller in preparing the annual financial statements and footnotes
- Assist Controller in working with all program units to develop the annual operating budget, including scenario analyses
- Assist Controller in coordinating and handling preparation, review, and filing of Federal forms 990, 5500 and 1099s
- Ensure financial information is prepared in accordance with the organization policy, GAAP, and IRS regulations
- Management of or participation in special projects
- Other duties as required
Background and experience expectations:
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or equivalent from an accredited school
- Minimum three (3) years of accounting experience, non-profit and/or public accounting experience preferred; Public education and charter school experience preferred
- Minimum one (1) year of payroll experience required
- Experience with Financial Edge preferred
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
- Experience with financial statement preparation
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff at all levels
- Strong problem solving, analytical, and planning skills
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
